Universal Design for Learning (UDL): By using the basic productivity tool, power point, we are utilizing the
Universal Design for Learning framework because the finished e-books can be saved as an MP4 and therefore
the information can be accessed by any device, ELL students will benefit because they will be able to listen
and watch these e-books for understanding, the e-books can also aid in the learning for visual and auditory
learners. Along with these items, power point can be used to create e-books with other standard-based
subjects for enhancement of the curriculum in the classroom.
Lesson idea implementation:
I will begin the lesson by showing the e-book, Time!, I created using the basic productivity tool, power
point. Once the presentation is complete I will discuss with the students the importance of time and how we
use it in our everyday lives. I will then take out my student learning clock to talk with the students about the
components of a clock (ie: minute hand, hour hand, etc.) and how they tell us the time. I will then discuss
with the students about the minutes on a clock and what they represent (ie: 10 = 50 minutes). Once we have
discussed these concepts thoroughly I will give the students a learning clock to practice given times. For
example, I would ask the class to make 2 o’clock on their student clocks and ask them to show me once they
have finished finding the time. I would guide students that were having trouble and continue this practice
until they seemed comfortable with telling time. I would continue working on the concept of time over a
week to be sure that the students understand fully and also to introduce the concept of “half hour”.
Once my students are capable of telling time accurately we will create our own e-books using the power
point productivity tool. Each student will make their own e-book demonstrating their knowledge of clocks and
how they tell time. I will show the students how I created my e-book but the students will have a choice in
how they want to talk about time as well as demonstrating their own knowledge of telling time. I will guide
students throughout this process and help if necessary. Once the students are finished with their e-books we
will have a class presentation of the books so that students can share their knowledge with their classmates.
Reflective Practice:
The concept of time is a challenge for most students because it involves knowing how to tell the hour as
well as the minutes (not just knowledge of numbers). I will want to make sure that all of my students are
getting as much help as possible in locating the time so they will be comfortable with this concept since it will
be something they will rely on for the rest of their lives. In using the power point productivity tool to create

an e-book the students are using their knowledge and understanding of telling time to demonstrate to others,
and themselves, how much they truly know about telling time. In creating this e-book they will reflect on
what they have learned and how to apply that knowledge so that others can learn about telling time as well.
Another way to expand upon this lesson is to upload the e-books to the classroom website so that parents
can see the work their students were able to complete, not only using a technology tool like power point, but
to see their child’s knowledge about time. The students can also have further extension with this program by
creating a review book prior to the unit test. The students can form groups and use this tool to create a
review e-book about telling time by including pictures or questions of clocks (digital and analog) to further
practice this skill so that they will be prepared for the test.
