New Zealand, celebrated 25-years of
its glorious existence in a high-octane
event attended by the who’s-who of the Indian
community, parliamentarians and highly
regarded priests of other temples in the city.
The event was attended by Auckland Mayor
Phil Goff, Leader of National Party Simon
Bridges, Honorary Consul of India Bhav
Dhillon, Parliamentary Under Secretary for
Ethnic Communities and MP for Mt Roskill
Michael Wood he and also represented Prime
Minister Jacinda Ardern who just started her
maternity leave, National List MP Kanwaljit
Bakshi, Dr Parmjeet Parmar, Melissa Lee,

As Bhartiya Mandir has strived to become
one of the most visited temples in the country
given its two and half decades of existence
and serving the extended Indian community
in several religious and community events,
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi sent his
gracious wishes to the temple acknowledging
and applauding the efforts of the temple’s
previous and current management for making
this feat and creating history.

their selfless efforts and contributions for years,
and over a decade for a few at Bhartiya Mandir.
The volunteers and members were offered with
a memento to recognise their contribution to the
temple and its growth over the years.
“It is important that we recognise the works,
efforts and support of the volunteers and
temple members who came made their selfless
contributions in running the temple,” President
Mr Prashar said.

undreds of devotees thronged the
Shree Radhe Krishna Mandir on the
occasion of 17th Patotsav Mahotsav
celebrations on Sunday, June 17.
Patotsav Mahotsav in Hinduism marks the
celebrations of the anniversaries of murti-
consecration (Prana Pratishtha) of Mandirs
(temples).
The word Patotsav comprises of two words
Paat and Utsav. While Utsav means festive
celebrations, Paat is derived from Patti, a strip
of garment tied on the head of a Murti.
The Patotsava ritual typically involves a
grand Abhishek of the Murtis which involves
pouring Panchamrut – milk, yoghurt, ghee,
sugar and honey, and Kesar-jal – water with
saffron, on the Murtis.
Many Aucklanders would be surprised to
know that Shree Radha Krishna Mandir, situated
quietly in the precinct of iconic Mahatma
Gandhi Centre in Eden Terrace, shares antiquity
only surpassed by Sandringham’s Balmoral
Mandir, which is the oldest Hindu temple in
New Zealand.
Not many would know that Shree Radha
Krishna Mandir has a glorious history of
almost three decades of existence as a centre of
devotion for the members of Hindu community
and beyond.

ceremonies were performed most auspiciously,

he Radhakrishna Mandir holds the unique history of having
constructed the first ever Shiv Ling using ice, way back in 1996.
“In 1996, a five foot Shiv Ling was constructed using ice and
this is the first time a Shiv Ling made of ice was done in New Zealand,”
Narendra Bhana, President of Auckland Indian Association told the
Indian Weekender.
With the success of the Prayer Hall, it was decided to build a proper
temple and thus began the big task of fundraising. Members started
doing catering at weddings and major festivals to raise funds for this
new Temple.
The new Radha Krishna Mandir was completed in 2001 and the
inauguration ceremonies took place between June 7 - 9, 2001.
At Radha Krishna Mandir all the major Hindu festivals such as Maha
Shivratri, Holi, Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Shravan Month, Shri
Krishna Janmashtami, Radha Ashthami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri,
Diwali, New Year and Tulsi Vivah are celebrated with much reverence.
Now the temple has a fulltime priest, Dr Pandit Devrambhai Raval
who conducts the daily rituals at the Temple.
“We are very proud to Dr Pandit Devrambhai who recently received
his PhD in Sanskrit from Shree Somnath Sandkrit University in Gujarat
India,” Dhansukh Lal, Vice President of Auckland Indian Association
told The Indian Weekender.

there were cultural performances, a range of
international cuisines on offer and more than 70
stalls and eight seminars offering advice about
living locally.

day and it’s great to see the support of the New
Zealand community for migrants; it’s great to

Abuse Awareness Day at Mt Eden War
Memorial Hall in the presence of hundreds of
senior citizens, parliamentarians, local board

Elder abuse is one of the silently rising
concerns among the community where seniors
are subjected to different forms of violence,
including neglect, physical, emotional, and
financial. Seniors, irrespective of their ethnic
background often undergo traumas of being
ignored by their own families and children.
To help and support such helpless and clueless
individuals, Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust
has started several programmes providing
them shelters at emergency homes, providing
counselling to families, activities and events to
engage the seniors of the community.
One such event to acknowledge the
contribution of the seniors in the community
and create awareness of the rising menace of
elder abuse was the celebration of World Elder
Abuse Awareness Day.
“We are there to help you, come to us if you
need any assistance and raise your voice against

latest production retells the
story of brothers Dara and
Aurangzeb—one who had the
love of the people and the
other who merely loved the
throne.
T
he history of the Mughal Empire,
spanning from the 1500s to 1857,
brings the names of great emperors
to the fore. The mind flips through the school
history textbooks that narrated the legends of
Babur, Humayun, Akbar, and Shah Jahan but
seldom does it recall the names of emperors
or their descendants who weren’t the main
characters in the stories being written then.
Prayas’ latest production highlights the life of
one such prince.
In the crown-hungry Mughal Empire, where
young princes eyeing the throne were slaying
their own kin, Dara Shikoh—the beloved son
of emperor Shah Jahan—was a liberal-minded
philosopher-prince. His story, unfortunately,
doesn’t make it into the mainstream; many
Indians still remain unacquainted with him. Had
he made it to the throne, the course of history
would have potentially altered drastically.
In Prayas’ Dara, this fleeting but enlightened
figure comes to life. If you are not familiar
with Indian Mughal history, don’t fret. Read
the big boards next to the stage entrance to get
a glimpse into the world you are about to set
in and then leave the rest to the script and the
convincing performances of the actors.
The play—originally written by Shahid
Nadeem and adapted by Tanya Ronder—
centres round Dara and Aurangzeb, two
sons of Shah Jahan, with strikingly different
personalities. While one recited shayaris and
scriptures from holy books, the other spoke
the language of swords and spears. While
one loved art, the other was a warrior. While

The play opens with a raging battle scene
between Dara (Prateek Vadgaonkar) and
Aurangzeb’s (Rishabh Kapoor) army. Well-
known fight choreographer Alexander
Holloway’s training is visible from the moment
the ensemble cast enters the stage. And the
actors are wonderful to watch in motion; the
ease with which they move, leaving room for
only minor, pardonable errors, is commendable.
To take a group of 23 actors—some familiar
to the Prayas family and some new—and
churn out a play would not have been an easy
feat for directors Amit Ohdedar and Sananda
Chatterjee.
An interesting character in this family
conflict is Shah Jahan (Mustaq Missouri). The
world knows about him and the story behind
the magnificent marble sculpture that is the
resting place of his beloved Mumtaz, but not
many know the story of this ruler in the years
that followed. Dara gives you a glimpse into
exciting and life-changing experience for
our globally ambitious customers, it can also
bring about challenges – such as dealing with
homesickness and difficulty understanding
education and health systems - as they navigate
life in a new city.

Dara is more than an intense domestic drama.
Like Prayas’ last year’s production Swabhoomi,
the play brings out a timely debate; in this
case, it is the religious intolerance on the rise
in the world. And it is perfectly captured in
the scene that unfolds in the court where Dara
is questioned by prosecutor Talib — a role
convincingly played by Aman Bajaj — who
unabashedly questions Dara’s faith in Islam.
The conversation between the two reveals more
about Prince Dara’s beliefs, his ideologies, and
his way of life than the entire play itself.It gives
Dara a voice the audience needs to hear: “Islam
is the only path I follow, I just don’t reject the
others”. The court scene is long but one of the
finest in the play and it is the effortless way in
which the actors—Prateek, Aman, and Sahil
Arora (Qazi Sayed)—deliver their dialogues
that makes it so engaging for the audience.
The scene is crucial to the play; iteducates the
audience on the lives of the two siblings when
they were younger (watch out for the parable
of the goat and the tiger) and leaves you with
more than one question to ponder over. Biased
as I may be to words, Dara’s dialogues leave an

Dara, although a community theatre
production, is an ambitious project. It is a
challenge to acquaint an audience with a
complex cast of characters but Dara shines
through the 110 minutes of its runtime.
The set, designed by Bhavesh Bhutadia and
Natasha Iyer, the elaborate costumes by Padma
Akula, and, of course, the immaculate beards of
the male members of the cast are just some of
the ways through which Prayas recreates a slice
of the 300-year Mughal rule in India. The team
successfully brings to light a piece of Mughal
history that is now forgotten by most if not all.

pre-schoolers at a healthy weight.

80,000 children’s teeth show those
living in the poorest neighbourhoods
are 12 times more likely to have the
worst oral health. While it is likely
that excess sugar consumption is
largely responsible, the low prices,
high availability and heavy marketing
of sugary products encourage this,
Dr Hale says.

Ms Seth, who immigrated to New Zealand
in 2004 with her family is a former avionics
technician at the Royal New Zealand Air Force,
and is now working at Rocket Lab. While Mr
Engineer, who has also been in New Zealand
for over 14 years, completed his engineering
from the University of Auckland, and is now
employed at the Crown research institute
Callaghan Innovation.
In the winning endeavour, the two Kiwi-
Indians were ably supported by their other team
members - Ben Tairea and Maddy King from
Wellington, and Jonah Belk from Dunedin.
In all, ActInSpace NZ had nine teams, with 42
participants, presenting a new space technology
idea after 24 hours of furious coding, planning
and pitching. Teams were asked to re-imagine
existing space technology and data into new
applications.
“And Te Marama won it with our start-up idea
to reduce the amount of repairs that humans do
in space by cost effectively using VR to control
repair robots remotely,” informed Mr Engineer.
“It was a long grilling exercise, but all of us are
very happy to have won it. It’s a huge honour
to represent New Zealand at a world stage, and
can’t wait for June 27.” The team flies to France
on June 24.
Similar to events held in over 71 cities across
35 countries. ActInSpace NZ was organised
by the Centre for Space Science Technology
(CSST) in partnership with New Zealand Space
Agency and ChristchurchNZ and support from

funding of NZ$2.5 million
(FJ$3.63 million) to Fiji’s COP 23
Presidency.
The funding memorandum was

Commissioner Jonathan Curr at the
Ministry of Economy in Suva.
“I would like to thank the New
Zealand Government’s initiative,

about to the COP 23 discourse,
but also in respective assistance in

E
very nation has a “tryst with destiny” moment, which is a defining moment in the nation’s
progression as a community, imagined or abstract.
The people of the nation, both current and future generations are expected to cherish
those “tryst with destiny” moments, which often forms a moral anchor in the evolution of the
nation over a period of time.
For uninitiated, the epithet “tryst with destiny,” comes from the historic speech of India’s first
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of India’s independence from the British colonial
rule.
“Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem
our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.
“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and
freedom,” Mr Nehru roared in front of India’s constituent assembly – the sovereign body.
Since then “tryst with destiny” has been etched permanently in Indian nation’s minds and
hearts.
In that respect, the year 2018 is all set to be etched in New Zealand’s history, if not at a level
similar to India’s independence eve, still of considerable significance.
Firstly, this year New Zealand is celebrating the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage. It
was on September 19, 1893, that after submitting a petition with nearly 32,000 signatures, New
Zealand became the first self-governing country to grant women the vote.
This year, the Ministry for Women Te Minitatanga mō ngā Wāhine is leading and coordinating
activities, and events, to mark this significant milestone.
It is noteworthy that in most other democracies then, including Britain and the United States,
women did not get that right until after the First World War.
Indeed, granting of women suffrage, or respectfully winning the right of women suffrage after
a sustained campaign (to be politically correct), was a stamp of progressivism.
Progressivism, scholars agree, is the support for advocacy of improvement of society by
reform. The idea that women deserve a say in country’s public life, including electing the
government was a very progressive – a stage where other contemporary advanced democracies
like Great Britain and the United States reached after two decades.
Similarly, the recent delivery of baby girl by New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern
imparts the year 2018 with a unique significance in the country’s history.
The idea that a country’s female Prime Minister – the topmost political authority – can deliver
a baby while leading the country is still seen as quite a progressive one.
It’s only that New Zealand had not created history in being the first case in the world where
country’s political head has delivered a baby while being in power. In fact, it has reached the
milestone, if this is a milestone, almost two decades after the South Asian state of Pakistan – a
country that many would disagree as anywhere near to being a progressive society as the modern
western world understands today.
In this regard, it is a timely reminder to many enthusiastic flag-bearers of western culture who
see everything emanating from the global west as the epitome of modernity and progressivism.
The countries of orient can also lead the world in showing the light of progression and
advancement.
Nevertheless, there is nothing to take away from New Zealand’s tryst with progressivism in
2018, as the idea of a woman Prime Minister having a baby while leading the country has never
been brushed under the carpet, despite some robust debates and discussions around the contested
topic.
It is to the credit of New Zealand politicians, of all stripes, the media, intelligentsia, and the
ordinary Kiwi who found themselves engaging on either side of the public debate around this
issue, to allow the idea to progress naturally.
The debates, the discussions, the disagreements around all issues of social importance are
paramount for a society’s overall advancement.
In this regard, New Zealand, a small South Pacific nation, which often struggles to find its
place on the world map, is continuing its tryst with progressivism and will continue to show the
light to the entire world for some conceivable future.
