Industry – Textile

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Nashik, India. At a very tender age, I moved to
Kuwait where I established a career. Since then, I’ve been working in that
country itself. I come to India every few months since my family resides here.

I was born into a joint family. My father was unemployed back then. My
mother was the only breadwinner of the house and she used to manage the
home as well. She earned her income through numberless sources like
stitching, cooking, etc.

Who would you say, had a remarkable influence on you

growing up and how?

Growing up, I’d say my mother had a pre-eminent influence on me. She was a
resilient, independent woman who fought against all odds in life.
I’d also give credit to the fact that I was very motivated and competitive as a
child despite my situation in life.

Please give us a summary of your career.

My career officially commenced when I started working for a company that

made Saris. Following this, I worked with a garments wholesale business.

Next, I worked with a commission agent. Through this job, I got in touch with
some Japanese people and consequently started working with them as a
commission agent in the textile/ manufacturing industry.

I work in Kuwait for Kaneyo Company Limited, which was earlier called
Kanematsu Corporation.

This company has 126 branches in the world and I’ve been working with them
for the past 40 years.

Which institutes, according to you, are the best for pursuing

this career?

In order to pursue this profession, you can secure a bachelor’s degree in

business administration or management studies. This strengthens your
foundation. You can pursue one of these degrees from ‘Narsee Monjee
Institute of Management Studies’ or any college affiliated to the ‘Mumbai
University’. As far as I know, their faculty is great.

What is the expenditure associated with the education/training

of this profession, approximately?

A bachelor’s degree typically lasts for about three years. For your business
administration, you’ll probably incur an expenditure of about INR
5,000–15,000 per year. This also depends upon the university you’re
attending.

The fee structure for Bachelor’s of Management Studies falls in the same
range too.

How does one manage to enter this field?

After completing your bachelor’s, many colleges give you placement

opportunities. Or, you can start applying to the desired companies.

What is the range of remuneration one can expect when

starting out in your line of career & industry?

Starting out — 1–2 lakhs per annum

5 years’ experience — 6–7 lakhs INR per annum

10 years’ experience — 9–12lakhs INR per annum

15 years’ experience — 20–25 lakhs INR per annum

20+ years’ experience — 27–30 lakhs INR per annum

The above figures vary from person to person depending upon the company
one’s working for, one’s experience, the location of job etc.

Please describe your work.

As a textile commission agent, my responsibilities include booking orders for

my company and taking orders from clients. Most of my work gets done
through phone calls and emails.

I spend about 8–10 hours at the office and work on all days except for
Monday since I’m residing in the Gulf.

I’m not required to carry out any night shifts.

What are some benefits that would encourage an individual to
consider textile commission agent job?

1. I love the fact that more people mean more clothes. Therefore, Textile is
a great industry to be in. There are several types of jobs in this industry
and numerous job opportunities, especially in Gulf countries.
2. Additionally, labor is also readily available since this industry doesn’t
really demand a ‘highly skilled’ labor force.
3. As a commission agent, my income is above average. I am very happy,
especially considering where I have grown from.

Can you mention a few challenges that you would want

someone to be aware of if they’re considering this career/job
course?

1. The degree of competition in the textile industry is extremely intense.

You ought to be creative and innovative since the trends in textile never
stay constant and the market keeps evolving. You have to keep coming
up with new concepts.
2. Due to fluctuations in currency rates, the imports and exports are also
affected, which may lead to losses.
3. Work-life balance is tough, as this is a labor-intensive work.
What are some relevant trends/skills/technologies that are
currently commanding a premium in textile commission agent
job ?

There aren’t any trends, skills or technologies as such. You just have to
master the art of being diligent and patient. Put in hard work and it’ll
reciprocate!

What kind of a person, do you think, would be content in this

field?

Since you’re the face of your business, it’s crucial to represent it in a way that
enables the company to thrive. Therefore, a person who is good with people
can win other’s trust, able to handle problems with a cool temper, work long
hours would be happy in this profession.

Given another choice, what would you do differently as far as

your professional selections are concerned?

No, I’m extremely content with my professional selections in life. This is

because I’m really passionate about my work.
What advice would you offer to students or professionals who
are just starting their journey on a path similar to yours?

If you’re selecting a particular path for yourself, stick to it for two to three
years, at least. Umpteen people give up when they don’t see sky-rocketing
results in the first year itself. You have to remain patient and persistent.

If you still don’t see any results after working diligently or you’re just not
enjoying what you’re doing, you can start re-evaluating your professional
selections and make a choice, because, at the end of the day, it’s important to
prioritize your mental health and interests, too.
