INFORMATION

THE PURPOSE OF THIS INSPECTION TASK IS TO PROV-


IDE OPERATORS THE NECESSARY ACTION WHEN THE
AIRCRAFT HAS FLOWN THROUGH A VOLCANIC ASH CLOUD
OR IS OPERATING IN THE AREA OF AN ACTIVE VOLCAN
OR SUFFERED FROM VOLCANIC ASH CONTAMINATION ON
GROUND.

VOLCANIC ASH IS ACTUALLY PULVERIZED ROCK AND


GLASS WHICH CAN HAVE DAMAGING EFFECTS TO AIR-
FRAME AND POWER PLANT BY CAUSING EROSION TO
WING LEADING EDGES,PROPELLER BLADES,SANDBLA-
STING WINDSHIELDS ETC...
IF ENCOUNTER WITH VOLCANIC ASH OCCURRED IN FLI-
GHT OR DURING TAKE OFF/LANDING, GET INFORMATION
FROM THE FLIGHT CREW.
MAKE SURE OF A POST FLIGHT REPORT IS ISSUED.

VOLCANIC ASH IS HARD,VERY ABRASIVE AND ACID


(PH BETWEEN 2 AND NEUTRAL);IT CAN CAUSE EROSION
/ABRASION,ETCHING OR SHOT-PEENING ON THE SURF-
ACE AND CAN REMOVE THE FINISHES/PROTECTION AND
THUS CAUSE DAMAGE/CORROSION.
THE ASH PARTICLES CAN BE OF DIFFERENT SIZES BUT
THE TEXTURE OF VOLCANIC ASH IS ALMOST THE SAME
AS TALCUM POWDER AND CAN ENTER ALL ORIFICES AND
GO THROUGH MANY SEALS. VOLCANIC ASH WILL STAY
ON BARE AND LUBRICATED SURFACES AND IN ALL COR-
NERS.
THE VOLCANIC ASH WILL MELT WHEN IT GOES THROUGH
THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER OF THE ENGINE.
THE MELTED ASH HAS VERY HIGH ADHESIVE QUALITIES
AND BONDS TO ENGINE PARTS AND THUS DECREASES
ENGINE PERFORMANCE. IT MAY OBSTRUCT THE FUEL
INJECTORS AND CAN CAUSE AN ENGINE SHUTDOWN.

GOGGLES AND A RESPIRATOR MASK.


MAKE SURE THAT THE RESPIRATOR MASK CAN REMOVE
VOLCANIC ASH FROM THE AIR.
VOLCANIC ASH CAN CAUSE EYE IRRITATION AND
INJURY TO THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.

DO NOT RUB THE SURFACE WHEN YOU REMOVE THE DUST


FROM THE AIRCRAFT. IF YOU RUB THE SURFACE YOU
CAUSE EROSION/ABRASION.

DO NOT USE FLUIDS TO REMOVE DUST/ASH; IF THERE


IS A LAYER OF DUST/ASH ON THE A/C SURFACE, RE-
MOVE IT USING A VACUM CLEANER,AIR BLOWER HAND
BRUSH OR SOFT CLOTH.
FLUIDS CAN MIX WITH THE DUST/ASH AND MAKE A
PASTE THAT CAN BE ABRASIVE AND CAN GO INTO AREA
THAT ARE NOT EASY TO CLEAN.

INSPECTION RECOMMENDATION

A) VOLCANIC ASH CAN CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE/CONTA-


MINATION ON THE STRUCTURE/SYSTEMS OF THE A/C.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY AND


THE TYPE OF DAMAGE AFTER VOLCANIC ASH CONTAMI-
NATION. THEREFORE IT IS NECESSARY TO DO A FULL
INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT TO KNOW THE DAMAGE
AND MAKE A DECISION ABOUT THE NECESSARY ACTION/
REPAIR.

B) ALL THE NECESSARY INSPECTIONS ARE VISUAL


UNLESS THE TEXT GIVES OTHER INSTRUCTION.
OPERATORS CAN REFER TO THE }NON DESTRUCTIVE
TEST MANUAL (NDTM) AND USE NON-DESTRUCTIVE
PROCEDURES.
C) IF DAMAGE IS FOUND ON THE AIRCRAFT STRUCTURE

EDGES ZND FLAP HINGE POINT FAIRING
SEE JIC 275000-EAR-10000; 579200-RAI-10000.
-CLEAN AND INSPECT WING FRONT SPAR AREA AND
FLAP HINGE POINTS.
-CHECK CONDITION OF LEADING EDGE DE-ICE BOOT
-INSPECT UPPER ND LOWER SKIN FOR DAMAGE
-INSPECT AILERONS AND TAB,SPOILERS AND FLAPS
FOR DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IF EVENT OCCURRED IN
FLIGHT.
-CHECK CONDITION OF AILERONS DE-ICING HORN
-CHECK ALL STATIC DISCHARGES.
