Unit Title: The Art of Proving Parallelograms Name: Alanah Evans

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 9 -12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

G-CO11: Prove geometric theorems. Theorems include: opposite sides are congruent, opposite angles are congruent, the

diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, and conversely, rectangles are parallelograms with congruent diagonals.

G.CO.A.1: Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment, based on the undefined notions of point, line,
distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will be able to successfully answer the following 4 questions:

1. What am I given in the initial statement?

2. What am I trying to prove?
3. Do I know the definitions that are in the given statement?
4. Does every assertion (ie statement) in the two-column proof have a relevant mathematical justification?

Unit Summary:

In this unit, we will be discussing parallelograms. We will first review some definitions that will define what a parallelogram is made up of. Next, we
will discuss how to we can determine if a quadrilateral is a parallelogram. The third concept we will discuss what a proof is and how we can prove
statements. At the end of the unit, we will prove the properties of parallelograms as well as solve real world problems involving parallelograms.

Assessment Plan:

3. Graphic organizer- proving the properties
of parallelograms and the relationship with
rectangles, rhombi and squares
4. Worksheet – apply the properties of
parallelograms to solve problems

Lesson 1 (Teacher Lecture)

Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence (Assessments): Lesson Activities:

Students will be able to 1. The student will be apply the With the use of guided notes, students will: define a variety of geometric terms and triangle

2. While working in a group

using GSP, it is clear to the
instructor that a parallelogram
has properties that only a
square, rectangle, and rhombi
have will only work for
specific cases.

Lesson 2 (Webercise/ iPad Lesson)

Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence: Lesson Activities:

Students will be able The student will apply line Using GeoGebra, students will construct a parallelogram and investigate the sides,
apply the properties of and angle relationships to angles and the diagonals of a parallelogram (as well as other quadrilaterals) and write
parallelograms into solve problems about their conjectures on a piece of paper. Then students will use the dynamic software to

homework.

2. In a group, students
will evaluate the
proposed proof of the
given proposition by
doing the following:

i. if the proposition is
false, explain and
provide a
counterexample
showing the prop is
false.
ii. If the proposition
is true, determine
whether the proof
is correct and
rewrite the proof
if incorrect.

iii. If the proposition

and proof is
correct,
evaluate if the
proof is well
written.
