Subject : Natural Science
Class /Semester : VIII / 1
Topic : Structure and Function of Plants
Sub topic : Structure and Function of Stems
Duration : 25 minutes

A. CORE COMPETENCE
CC1. Respect and appreciate the teaching of their religion
CC2. Respect and appreciate the honest behavior, discipline, responsibility, caring (tolerance,
teamwork), polite, confident, effective in interacting with social and natural environment in
a range of social and existence.
CC3. Understand and apply knowledge (factual, conceptual and procedural) based on curiosity
about science, technology, art, culture and events related to the phenomenon of the visible.
CC4. Treat, analyze, and present in the concrete area (use, parse, write, modify, and make) and the
realm of the abstract (write, read, count, draw, and write compose) in accordance with the
lessons learned in school and other resources in the same point of view/ theory.
B. BASIC COMPETENCE AND PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
CC BASIC COMPETENCE PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

3 3.4 Analyze the relation structure and 3.4.1 Describe the structure of plant stems
function of plant tissue, and 3.4.2 Describe the characteristic of plant stems
technology inspired by the 3.4.3 Explain the differentiated monocot stem
structure of the plant and dicot stem
3.4.4 Mention three functions of plant stems
3.4.5 Mention two types of plant stems

C. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Student with logical can describe structure of plant stems after discussion
2. Student with logical can describe characteristic of plant stems after discussion
3. Student with logical can explain differentiated of monocot stem and dicot stem after
discussion
4. Student with critical can mention three functions of plant stems after discussion
5. Student with critical can mention two types of plant stems after discussion

D. LEARNING MATERIALS
Stem are part of the shoot system which also include leave and flowers. Stems connect the
roots that gather water and mineral to the leave that and carry out photosynthesis. Stems has some
characteristic, stems generally has long round shape like cylinder, has internode bounded by node,
and on the node when leave and buds are attached. There is a difference between the outer stem
structure of monocot and dikotyl plants. Monocots stem rods have clearly visible stem segments,
whereas dikotil plant stems have segments of stems that are not clearly visible. Stems serve to
support the parts of plants that are on the ground, and as a road transporting water and minerals
from roots to the leaves and roads transporting food (photosysthesis result) from leaves throughout
the body. On some plant stems can be modified and also serves as a place to store food reserve.
Example potato, sugar cane plant, and turmeric rhizome.
Stems has some structure and function of the stem tissue. The outermost part of the stem is
composed of epidermal cells. On a mature dikotyl stem, the epidermis will be damaged and
replaced by a periderm or cork tissue. in the deeper part of the epidermis there is the cortex. the
cortex on the stem is also composed of parenchymal tissue. in some plants such as sugar cane,
potatoes, and turmeric rhizomes, in this area of the cortex stored food reserves. the vascular bundle
on the stem is a continuation of the vascular bundle at the root. through this vascular bundle the
water and minerals are absorbed by the roots forwarded by the vascular bundle on the stem to the
leaf. In the dicotile stem, the vascular bundle are arranged in a circle, whereas on the monocotyl
stem, the vascular bundle are dispersed. Between xylem and phloem in the vascular bundle dicotyl
plant there is active vascular cambium that divides

G. LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Activities Steps of Discovery Activity Description Duracy
Learning Model
Preliminary Stimulation  The teacher give greeting the 5 minute
student.
 Teacher designates one of the
students to lead the prayer.
 Teacher asks about student and
checks the presence of student by
presenting.
 Teachers give apperception and
motivation
Have you ever seen a plant stem ?
Are you know function of stem?
 Teacher relate the material with
previous material or previous
student experience.
 Teacher communicate the purpose
of learning to student.
 Teachers convey to student the
benefits to be gained after studying
this chapter
 Teacher divides student into 3
groups, each group consist 4-5
student
Core Problem statement 1. Observe 12 minutes
 Student get together with groups
that have been determined.
 Student observe the problem found
on the worksheet entitled "structur
and function of stem".
 Student identify the concepts that
must be obtained by observing the
problem on worksheet
2. Ask
 Student with the group to discuss
with each other to express opinions
on the problem on the worksheet
 Student submit a temporary answer
(hypothesis) about the problem.
Data Collection 3. Experiment
 Student collect data and literature
about structure and function of the
stem.
 Student write the discussion result
about problem in worksheet after
discussion with the group.
Data processing 4. Associate
 Student together with the group to
process and analyze the data to get
the concept of the structure and
function of the stem
Verification 5. Communicate
 Student present structure and
function of the stem and results of
discussion on the worksheet by
presenting the results of the
discussion.
 Student respon to the result of
discussion other student have to
communicate the results of their
discussion.
Closing Generalization  Student are guided by a teacher to 3 minute
conclude the study were given.
 Teacher provide evaluation to
student.
 Teacher inform that the next
meeting student study about
structure and function of the stem.
 Teacher close learning with pray
and greet
