Dear Friends,
The Franciscan Renewal Center exists to
witness the Franciscan way of life and share
with others a vision that captures the trans-
formative influence of Franciscan spirituality
for peace and good in the world. So it is with
great joy that we introduce the Franciscan
Mentors Program beginning in October, 2010.

This is a long-term program that supports the

community’s desire to not only learn about
Franciscan spirituality in more depth but to
share that knowledge with other community
members.

Learn more about the Mentors Program on page 9 and come to a

kick-off dinner hosted by the friars on October 29. There you can get
all of your questions answered and enjoy some delicious medieval
food.

Along with our Mentors Program this Fall, we have a

wonderful slate of retreats, programs and events sup-
porting our vision. Some are explicitly based on Fran-
ciscan spirituality or what we refer to as The Franciscan
Way. Those are identified by the symbol of a Franciscan
friar in habit. The habit is a full-length tunic designed in the form
of a cross. Originally, it was made of rough, unbleached, homespun
wool to reflect a life of simplicity and poverty. It is generally brown
in color and tied at the waist by a cord. Three knots at one end recall
the three Gospel vows which are at the base of a Franciscan friar’s
life. If you want to know more about the Franciscan world-view,
these retreats and programs are for you.

We hope you will look through this catalog and find something that
stirs your soul. I look forward to seeing you on our peaceful grounds.

Peace and All Good,

Fr. Joe
Father Joe Schwab, OFM

Honoring the International Season for Nonviolence and following in the

tradition of St. Francis, we are seeking to plant “Seeds of Peace” by offer-
ing events focused on peace throughout the year. These programs can be
identified by the Franciscan Renewal Center Lotus symbol shown above.
May 2010 be the year we are all inspired to make peace personal, to be “the
change we want to see in the world,” and to offer to every environment we
find ourselves in our “seeds of peace.”

International Day of Peace

Prayer Service
Tuesday, September 21, 7-9 pm

The Faith In Action Ministry at the Franciscan Renewal Cen-

ter and Arizona Dept. of Peace (AZDOP) invite you to com-
memorate the International Day of Peace with prayer. The
International Day of Peace occurs annually on September 21. To
inaugurate the day, the Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters.
The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all conti-

gather to put aside our differences …on purpose.

There will be prayers of peace from different faith communities

and dances and songs by children of different ethnic groups ex-
pressing their passion and hopes for peace. The evening prom-

dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, is filled with special

year is a special weekend retreat with monk and musician,

Announcing

october
The Franciscan Mentors Program
A certificate program for Casa Community members
There are many special things about the Franciscan Renewal
Center but the one thing that stands out above all the others is our
Franciscanism:

 Our belief that God is all love and all goodness and that it is
God ‘s overflowing love that is the source of creation and the
Incarnation.

 The well-known Franciscan values of joy, hospitality, service

to the poor and marginalized, simplicity of life and care for all
creation.

 The lesser known Franciscan values of relationship over

efficiency, looking to the coincidence of opposites for answers,
and intuition as a superior form of knowing over rationality.

 The hard teachings around poverty and humility and their

surprising relationship to generosity, love and joy.

These are beliefs we want to preserve and pass on. These are
teachings we want to more fully explore. These are values we want
to better understand and support in one another.

In short, we want to encourage the way of life pioneered by Saints

Francis & Clare to be carried forward by our community in a
contemporary way.

Our vision is that the Franciscan Mentors Program will serve to

better educate a group of community members about our founders,
history, values and the Franciscan way of life. In turn, these
community members would then serve as mentors to the rest of the
community. The program will involve courses, retreats, prayer days,
films and experiences such as visits to the San Carlos Mission and
sessions on how to be a mentor.

Prayer in the Cave of the Heart

Weekend Silent Contemplative Retreat
October 1-3
Fr. Cyprian Consiglio, OSB, Cam

“There is no better retreat for those who

celebrate St. Francis and seek to deepen
their interior prayer life.”

Friars at the Casa dedicate October the month of St. Francis of Assisi!
The kick-off event for this year is a retreat led by a native Arizonan,
Cyprian Consiglio. He will lead the celebration in the Franciscan tradi-
tion of prayer, some silence, chanting, singing, teaching and several
guided meditations. This gifted Camaldolese monk, musician and
teacher will draw new insights about the “interior way” from the life of
Francis, the teachings of Jesus, St. Paul and the desert fathers.

Cyprian’s teachings include the joyful message that the call to contem-
plation is universal and awakened in us at baptism. This awakening,
he believes, is one that is already within us and is waiting to be re-
discovered.

Spiritual directors will be available to give retreatants an opportunity to

share their faith journey in individual sessions.

Fee per person includes lodging, meals, Friday’s concert, and

materials: $215 single, $165 double. Commuter includes meals and
materials: $130.
Check-in Friday, 5 pm; dinner at 6 pm. Retreat concludes Sunday
with lunch.

Cyprian Consiglio, OSB, Cam, is a monk, musician, and

spiritual teacher. An internationally known performer, record-
ing artist, and composer, he has numerous collections of original
sacred, world, and liturgical music to his credit. A student of the
world’s spiritual traditions, Consiglio has offered retreats and
conferences around the world. He is the author of “Prayer in the
Cave of the Heart.”

John Pennington, an acclaimed percussionist, will join Consiglio in an opening

concert of sacred music in honor of St. Francis.

Transitus
The memorial of the passing of St. Francis
Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

Each year, Franciscan men and women all over the world solemnly
gather to commemorate a touching event in the life of St. Francis.
It is called the TRANSITUS – that is, his passage from earthly life to
everlasting life. Francis died (on the evening of October 3rd) just
as the brothers were singing the verse from his Canticle of Brother
Sun:

“Praised be You, my Lord, through our

Sister Bodily Death, from whom no living
person can escape.”

This is a bittersweet night. On this night we recall some of the

legends of Saint Francis while we encourage one another to live
lives of praise deeply rooted in the Gospel.

Francis is rumored to have had a “sweet tooth” … Lady Jacoba used

to bake almond cookies as a gift for him. In fact, she brought them
to him the night he died. To celebrate that sweet memory, each year
we have a dessert potluck by the pool after the Transitus service.
All are invited to bring something sweet to share!

The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

Sunday, October 3, 2010,
A celebration of the life of St. Francis of Assisi
observed at all the regular Sunday masses

As we have come to know, Saint Francis was a man with keen

vision, exquisite sensitivity, a great heart, and a deep conviction of
the eternal values. Certainly he was someone deserving of a great
celebration of his gift to the world. Please come and celebrate his
life and inspiration in these beautiful festive liturgies!

Spirituality Retreat for Women

October 15-17
Carole Whittaker, PhD and Gloria Cuevas-Barnett

As our world moves toward globalization and increasingly pervasive

technology, it also holds the possibility of opening up a new kind or lev-
el of human consciousness that can lead to greater freedom and whole-
ness for humankind, both individually and collectively. In order to do
so, it needs a spirituality that is adequate to understand and express
the depth dimensions and meaning of contemporary experience. How
does Divine Presence manifest in this kind of world? Does our personal
participation matter?

Women are particularly well-suited to develop and embody the

spirituality that integrates inner spiritual dimensions of being with

our hearts in dialogue and ritual.

cis first understood his vocation—La Porziuncula.

In San Francisco, Angela Alioto built a replica of the Porziuncula “the

little portion,” in honor of her favorite saint. Her vision is to build a
Franciscan Shrine dedicated to “peace and good” in the world. Please
join Angela after the 5:00 pm Mass on October 16 in the church to
hear the story of her vision and watch a video of the beautiful replica
of the place Francis began and ended his journey on this earth.

No fee.

Franciscan Order.

Spiritual Direction
Exploring a relationship with God

Within each of us lies the desire beyond

the moment, to discover our true selves, to grow
closer to God and to one another. A spiritual
director can help you satisfy that longing.
Spiritual direction is a time-honored term for a conversation, ordinarily be-
tween two persons, in which one is seeking a companion who is specifically
educated and experienced about the ways in which God may be touching
her or his life.

What happens in Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is really not about being “directed.” Rather, it is very
much about being encouraged to draw closer to God through conversation,
listening and prayer. We talk about what’s on your mind. For example:

 What is happening in your life that separates you from living into
deeper meaning?
 How is God present or absent in your life?
 How do you know God’s direction for your life?

How do I find a Spiritual Director?

The Secret to Intimacy
A Weekend Retreat
November 12-14
Terry Hershey

“Terry is funny, high energy and has a

magnificent gift for storytelling.”
“The material was simple but life-changing.”
From recent retreat evaluations

What does it mean to be real, honest and authentic? What does it mean
to practice real communication (even with people who are different or
difficult)? Why are we afraid to be real? Terry teaches us--with very
practical tools--about a life with real and open communication built
on a foundation of kindness, appreciation, honesty, sensitivity and
attention. The retreat will also help us understand that intimacy has
little to do with the other person. Intimacy begins with me.

Someone has observed that the longest journey is the 18 inches from the head to the heart. Similarly, for
most Christians, the longest journey God calls us to take is the journey from what we believe about God in
our heads, to what we experience of God in our hearts.

OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS

A Roman Catholic community of the Franciscan Province of St. Barbara

On February 26, 2006, the Chapel at the Franciscan Renewal Center was
dedicated as The Conventual Church of Our Lady Of The Angels. Since that
time, many have asked the question: “What is a conventual church?”

Churches are “conventual” when they belong to the convent of the religious
community (in this case, the Franciscans) rather than to the diocese. We are
not a parish.

We will continue to belong to the Franciscan community and continue our

cooperative partnership with the mission of the diocese. A conventual church
is not a parish church; rather it is guided by the religious order—for the Casa,
the Franciscans—in its mission and ministries.

In addition to daily and Sunday Mass, the church offers:

Baptism, Family Catechesis and Sacrament

Preparation for Children
Infant Baptism
Our Lady of the Angels offers infant baptism to registered members of the
church. Baptisms take place during Sunday Mass at regularly scheduled
intervals throughout the year.. We do not offer private baptisms except in
the case of medical emergencies. If you would like to start the conversation

in the lobby or on our website.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for Children

Baptism preparation for children ages seven and over
Children over the age of seven are considered to have reached the “age of
reason” and are, therefore, expected to have adequate instruction in the
fundamentals of their faith before baptism. After appropriate preparation
they will celebrate the three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirma-
tion and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil.

Family Catechesis
The Church recognizes that parents are the primary faith educators of
their children. Family-based religious education/faith formation is offered
to families registered at Our Lady of the Angels. This process combines
monthly family meetings, home study materials and participation in Sun-
day Liturgy. Meetings are held on Sunday mornings. Registration is open
throughout the year.

Sacrament Preparation for Children

All sacrament preparation programs require that families be registered
members of Our Lady of the Angels and are co-enrolled in the Family Cat-
echesis program.

First Reconciliation
Children in grades 2 and above can enroll in this sacrament preparation
program, which begins in the fall. This process combines monthly family
meetings with home study materials.

Confirmation and First Communion
Students who are in the third grade and above and who have completed
their first reconciliation are eligible to enroll in the Confirmation/Eucharist
program. The Phoenix Diocese celebrates the Restored Sequence of Initia-
tion; therefore Confirmation will be celebrated prior to First Communion at
the same Mass. The process includes family meetings, student classes and
home study materials.

Students who have completed their First Communion and still need to be
confirmed are welcome to participate in this program. Age appropriate
programs are available. Please call for details.

Sacraments for Adults

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.)

This program is for a person considering becoming a Catholic or who simply
wishes to learn more about the Catholic Church. R.C.I.A. is a journey in
faith designed to form and inform inquirers who are one of the following:
1. An unbaptized person
2. A person baptized into a faith tradition other than Catholic
3. A baptized Catholic who was not raised as a Catholic.
If you are interested or even curious, the next formal “Inquiry Period” will
begin in October 2010.

Sacrament of Marriage
Couples wishing to be married at the Church of Our Lady of the Angels
at the Franciscan Renewal Center must schedule an interview with one of
our priests. The preparation period is at least 9 months in advance of the
desired wedding date.

Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)

This sacrament is available by appointment with a priest. Communal ser-
vices of reconciliation are celebrated in the seasons of Advent and Lent.

Anointing of the Sick

Members of our community who are ill and would like to receive the Sacra-
ment of the Anointing of the Sick, please call the Casa Front Desk at 480-
948-7460 and ask to speak to one of the priests. Catholics are encouraged
to call and request this sacrament whenever they face a serious illness or
when surgery is first scheduled.

Communion to the Sick and Homebound

Members of our community who are ill or otherwise unable to attend Mass
and would like to receive Holy Communion, please call the Casa Front
Desk at 480-948-7460. Ministers of Care are commissioned to bring Eu-
charist to members of our community who are unable to attend Sunday lit-
urgy because of sickness, disability or aging. These Lay Ministers provide
fellowship, prayer and an opportunity to share in Holy Communion.

Individual Counseling & Support Groups
The Franciscan Renewal Center provides a staff of professional counselors, all
of whom are licensed by the State of Arizona Board of Behavioral Health. Our
counselors take time from private practices to counsel individuals, families, and
couples with one-on-one sessions, as well as facilitate support groups that deal
with a variety of adult issues. All of their service to the Casa is voluntary.

Individual sessions are available mornings, afternoons and evenings, Monday

through Friday, and require an appointment. For an appointment, please call
the Counseling Ministry at (480) 948-7460, extension 133, between the hours
of 8:30am and 12:00 Noon, Monday through Friday, or leave a message on the
Counseling voice mail system and your call will be returned as soon as possible.
An appointment is NOT required for any of the on-going support groups.

Grounded in the Gospel concepts of peace and human dignity, the Casa
CounselingMinistry provides an opportunity for its members to serve others. As
“wounded healers,” the ministry has the privilege and responsibility to actively
participate in God’s work through those who reach out to us for hope and care.

For counseling services, a suggested donation is appreciated. This ministry is

self supporting.
