Honors Algebra 2
The class opened with a real life example and graph. The intention was for the students to
work on math literacy and learn to better read and analyze graphs. After everyone shared their
opinions on the graph, Ms. Fruin went over a quiz the students had the following week as well as
a worksheet. There was plenty of time for the students to ask questions and she walked around
the room to make sure the students could get all of their questions answered. She explained to
them that it’s okay to ask questions and not to be afraid of failure; without questions we never
learn. She then went into the lesson stating that because people were at different points and not
everyone knew all the same things about what they were learning about (completing the square)
she was going to start from the beginning and go step by step. After that the students had time to
start their homework.

Algebra 1
When the students were first introduced the lesson and talking about the upcoming week
(with lots of tests and quizzes coming up), they were very clearly upset about the situation.
Rather than telling the students to “get over it,” Ms. Fruin allowed the students 20 seconds to let
out all of their complaints. After that point the students were no longer allowed to be distracting
and they moved on to the lesson in which they reviewed some questions and issues they had
when she was absent the following week. She then had them look at a graph about dogs. It was
kind of a fun activity for the students, but more importantly she tied it back to the importance of
knowing how to read graphs and their implications. When students were reluctant to talk, she
had them turn and talk to one another. This made them more comfortable and made sure she
heard all of their explanations. She then used “talking sticks” when the students were still
reluctant to speak allowed. These sticks had random students’ names on them and made the
selection of sharing much easier; it also prompted the students to talk more. Afterwards, she had
them do an activity on their chrome books, and finally ended with an exit slip for the students to
complete. She was using this to make sure she could really understand and see where all of the
students were as far as understanding the lesson and other math problems. She ended the class by
telling them to make sure they come and seek her for help.

HA2- Had students prepare for their next test and told them
exactly what she was looking for. This helps her to see what the
students need to work on. [7] When doing practice problems she
had the students at first work alone and then do it as a group in
class. [5] She and I walked around the room to answer any
questions the students had while they did their work. [2]
A1- Ms. Fruin reviewed with them that they need to do a better job
of explaining their understanding using math vocabulary when it
comes to the assignments. She showed examples and then asked
them questions about her own performance. “Do I grade fairly?...
Does your grade reflect your understanding?...” [7] She then had
the students do an activity to find the linear price of a Starbucks
cup. [5 and 3] It allowed them to use their math skills and apply
them to real life.
Making sure that the students know exactly what she is looking for
is extremely helpful as they move forward and continue to work on
their skills.
Real life examples make the class far more interested and engaged
I absolutely loved the activity we did with Algebra 1 today. You
could really see that the students made the realization that math
has an application to their lives too!

Through a desmos activity and normal lesson with the Honors
Algebra 2 students, they were able to get a more diverse and
interactive way of learning (2 and 3)
The real life example and activity title “Where’s the Beef?” had
students work in groups and search through an article and answer
questions related to the most recent lessons they have learned (4
and 5)
The Where’s the Beef activity made students think more
analytically and apply the statistics they found to the world around
them. The group aspect of it changed their learning and made it a
collaborative effort in which they had to work together to find the
answers but also teach one another how to do some of the
problems
The desmos activity that the Algebra 2 class did was innovative
and made the students use their prior knowledge to solve problems
I appreciated how Ms. Fruin handles different conflicts, when
students are acting up she does not try to demean them or
manipulate them she lets them have their fun for the most part
until it becomes distracting to the whole class (boys were making
math jokes during the group activity)
