THEORY OF PLATES
(Structural Engineering)
Time: 3hrs Max.Marks:75

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B.

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A.
Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each
question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A
5 × 5 Marks = 25

1.a) Explain the various assumptions made in the derivation of governing differential
equation for bending of plates. [5]
b) Explain the various methods of obtaining the solution for thin rectangular plates.
[5]
c) Explain the behavior of orthotropic plates. [5]
d) Explain the behavior of plates on elastic foundations. [5]
e) Explain the various parameters influencing the buckling load of plates. [5]

Starting from fundamentals, derive the governing differential equation for
bending of a rectangular plate subjected to a transverse uniformly distributed load
‘q’. Assume the longitudinal edges of the plate are fixed.
OR
[10]

3. Determine an expression for the deflection of a rectangular plate, length ‘a’ and
width ‘b’, subjected to a transverse uniformly distributed load ‘p’. All the edges
of the plate are simply supported. [10]

4. Determine the maximum deflection of a simply supported plate of size ‘a × b’

subjected to sinusoidal loading. Use the Navier solution. [10]
OR
5. Using Levy’s solution, determine the maximum deflection of a simply supported
rectangular plate ‘2b × b’ subjected to hydrostatic pressure. [10]

6. Find the maximum deflection of a fixed circular plate of radius ‘r’ subjected to
uniformly distributed load ‘q’. Also determine the shear force and bending
moment at the support. [10]
OR
7. Derive the governing differential equation for bending of an anisotropic plate.

elastic foundation and subjected to uniformly distributed load. The size of the
plate is ‘2L × L’ [10]
OR
9. Obtain an expression for the deflection of a large plate subjected to equidistant
concentrated forces each of magnitude ‘P’. [10]

10. Derive the governing equation of a plate subjected to the combined action of
lateral load and in-plane forces. [10]
