1.0 WORK METHODOLOGY.

Based on the supplied structural drawings of Boiler Chimney of Of Unilever

Bangladesh Ltd at Kalurghat, Chittagong, Bangladesh, “The Structural
Designer” independently analysis of the structure incorporating various design
requirements as per Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) - 2006..

2.0 CHIMNEY DESIGN CONCEPT & CRITERIA AND CONSTRUCTION

TIME
(l) The M.S Chimney FOR third Boiler was constructed at 1984 which is 10.5 m
high having 0.6m cowl.It has 2 nos Guy band. Details are shown at enclosed
drawing.
(2) The M.S Chimney FOR new Boiler was constructed at 2005 which is 13.425
m high having 0.6m cowl.It has 3 nos Guy band. Details are shown at enclosed
drawing.

3.0 Design Assumption:

 Support condition pin connection.
 The lateral stability of the Chimneys are provided through cable from Guy
band to fixed rigid support at various location.
 Details are shown in Drawing and Picture.

4.1 Codes and Standard:

Bangladesh National Building Code - 2006 (BNBC).

4.2 Member Dimensioning

Member dimensioning has been adopted in analysis as per drawing.
4.3 Material
(i)Main structure made by M.S Sheet. Details are shown at enclosed drawing.

4.4 General Load Data

Dead load:
Dead load is the vertical load due to the weight of permanent structural and non-
structural component of the Chimney.
Unit weight of materials and the calculation of design dead loads are according to
section 2.2, Chapter 2, part 6 of BNBC.
Wind load
The calculation of wind load confirms the Sub-clause 2.4, Chapter 2, and part 6 of
BNBC. The following equation has been used to calculate sustained wind pressure
of the structure.
Pz = Cg Cp Cc Ci Cz Vb2 [BNBC, 2.4.6.2, 2.4.6.3 page – 6-33, 6-34]
Exposure A was considered for wind load calculation.
.
Basic Wind Speed: 260 km per hour (Ref. BNBC)

4.5 Load Combination:

R.C. structural member will be designed to have enough strength not less than that
required to resist the most unfavorable effect of the combination of the factored
loads shown below.

1. 1.2DL
2. 1.2 DL+1.3 WL

Where DL = Dead Load, WL = Wind Load.

5.0 Analysis

The analysis was done based on supplied drawing ,Site picture and as per site
present condition.

6.0: Observations:

(i)Structural drawings of 2 nos Boiler Chimney are okay.

(ii)Observing the Boiler Chimney physically and studying the picture, Stability of
both Boiler Chimney okay but old Boiler (third boiler) Chimney guy cables seems
less stronger now. New Boiler Chimney guy cables okay.

7. Conclusions and Recommendation:

(i) Guy Cables of old Boiler (third boiler) Chimney need to be replaced by
new one (same as new Boiler Chimney).

(ii) New Boiler Chimney Guy Cables seems okay.
