ASSIGNMENT 5.1 ACTIVITY PYRAMID 2

Lesson Plan

Common Core Standard to be addressed:

Number Sense

1.0 Children begin to understand numbers and quantities in their everyday environment.

1.4 Count up to five objects, using one-to-one correspondence (one object for each number

word) with increasing accuracy.

1.0 Children begin to sort
and classify objects in their everyday environment.

Geometry

1.0 Children begin to identify and use common shapes in their everyday environment.

1.1 Identify simple two-dimensional shapes, such as a circle and square.

Title of Lesson: Magazine Shape Hunt and Sort

Background Information: The students should have prior knowledge of shapes names and
appearance. Students must have experience with using scissors to cut, and be able to flip through
the magazine pages carefully.

Objective Once the children have experience with the shapes and cutting. The task will become
simpler to complete. Identifying the shapes in items within the magazines will not be as
challenging. Children will gain knowledge that the shapes can be found in many items or objects
with in their surroundings.
Materials:
-Glue sticks
-Poster boards for each shape
-Scissors
-Magazines
-Markers

Procedure:
Review – Student’s should have prior knowledge identifying shapes.
ASSIGNMENT 5.1 ACTIVITY PYRAMID 3

Overview – The students will be directly instructed to the big poster boards that have

each individual shape drawn out and the word underneath it. They must search for items that

have the specific shape cut them out in the magazines. I will model the activity to demonstrate

what needs to be done.

Educators must remember to guide discovery as well as demonstrating how this should be done

in order for the child to have an idea of what is expected for them to learn.

Presentation – First have a discussion reviewing the shapes. Then ask students to
identify shapes in the magazines and cut them out. Then students will match the picture or object
selected from the magazine to match the corresponding shapes on the posters and glue them.

The discussion can be expanded to allow children to share their knowledge and understanding of
the things they need to complete.

Differentiated Instruction
Learning styles being addressed are visual, kinesthetic and social learning styles, which
are supported by this activity.

Having a discussion with children about the different learning styles can help them identify how
they learn better themselves. Connecting this section to exploratory play will be a more flexible
way for the children to seek forms best fitting them individually. Teaching children that there is
no specific correct way to learn will allow them to try all options and identify which works best
for them. Allowing them to become more efficient. Problem solving is a way for them to learn
how to correctly approach situations.

Discussion Questions: 1) Which shape did you find the most of?
2) Which shape was difficult to find?
3) Name some objects that represent each shape up on the poster?
4) Can you find some of these shapes outside?
5) Can you identify some shapes in your home?

Discussions are encourage between the children and also between the students themselves to
help strengthen their social skills, to seek further opinions, points of view as well as further
investigation to support opinions. Both the adults and children share the power of direction.

Evidence of Learning:
Students will be able to identify shapes in their every day environment.
Will observe who participates and ask questions as evidence of learning.

Next Steps:
ASSIGNMENT 5.1 ACTIVITY PYRAMID 4

If students showed evidence of learning have students draw shapes onto paper. Then
discuss how many sides are in each shape.
Go back and discuss more in depth shapes and tips that can help identify them. For
instance a triangle has three sides.

Home Extension Activity – Have students explore items or object in the home. Next have
students draw the items and tell which shape corresponds to that item and why?
