WHMIS and Household Safety Symbols

1. Review the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) and

household safety symbols and the general risks and safety measures associated
with hazardous substances. Create a safety symbol questionnaire and exchange it
with a partner.

2. Choose a workplace or job site where people work with dangerous materials.
Interview a manager or use another strategy to find out about the materials used and
the safety rules workers follow.

Share your findings with the class.

Use Tools Finding Sources, Question Organizer I or

Question Organizer II and Listening for Main Ideas.

3. Create a display or presentation to demonstrate safety while using chemicals in the

classroom, home and/or workplace. For example, using and mixing cleaning
solutions may cause harmful fumes. Include information on the WHMIS and
household safety symbols and how they relate to safety.

Use Tool Thinking About Form for Presentations.
