SHOCKING !!!
YES COUNTERFEITING CAN
HAVE FATAL CONSEQUENCES
DID YOU KNOW!
Concern continues to grow over fake aircraft parts
1 December 1995
As if the dis covery of unapproved parts in Air Force One (See CC 11/95) was not
enough, a recent raid by law enforcem ent on an ordinary garage in Hartford
Connecticut has heightened fears over the trade in counterfeit aircraft parts . The
s eizures of ordinary looking parts for use in jet engines may s eem innocuous enough
but these looked genuine but were m ade of soft m etal which could have caused
catas trophic engine failure.
That the growth in unapproved and fake aviation parts is accelerating fas t is not in
doubt – s om e in the indus try believe that it is only a m atter of tim e before a major
commercial jet dis as ter occurs that can be traced back to the ins tallation of bogus
parts . Som e parts are bought from s crap yards near m ajor airports where it is legal
for anyone to buy crates of dis carded turbine blades , compress or fines , gears ,
bearings , com bus tion parts and any other com ponents . Thes e parts are then
“reconditioned” a process colloquially known in the indus try as “s trip and dip”. Once
repackaged and kitted out with fake certification papers the parts are s old to
dis tributors and end us ers .
Indus try ins iders have reported horror s tories of counterfeit engine parts for jum bo
jets being intercepted m om ents before they were to be ins talled on fully loaded
aircraft, of bribes , and fals ified ins pection and m aintenance records . Fake parts have
even been found in the parts inventory of Marine One the pres idential helicopter.
Pratt and Whitney the worlds larges t jet engine manufacturer has reported
intercepting 6 fake jet engines in Texas . They were in transit from As ia to an airline in
Africa. The engines had been reverse engineered by copying the rem ains of an
aircraft that had cras hed in a rem ote location in As ia. Pratt and Whitney inspected the
engines , es tablis hed that they were not airworthy and alerted the African buyers who
were very grateful. Pratt and Whitney are als o assis ting with the pros ecution of a
backs treet machine s hop in Milan which produced 360 fake parts for a popular
engine. The fakes were dis covered after US Cus toms became sus picious about the
m aterials they were wrapped in.
