CONFERENCE BOOKLET
10 - 13 JUNE 2018
UN Youth’s premier event returns again and you will be a part of it. Over 4
days you will have the ability to partake in thrilling debate, engaging guest
speakers and an all-round inspiring experience, NZ Model United Nations
is guaranteed to provide education, excitement and, most importantly,
fun.
Hosted at Victoria University's Kelburn Campus, you will have the chance to
experience a taste of life as a diplomat. Between workshops and simulated
committees, you will be given a platform to discuss important topics for
the international community. In the process of debate, you will learn more
both about the world and their own place within it as a global citizen.
Furthermore, alongside 269 other like-minded individuals, you can band

together, build friendships, and tackle the world, one problem at a time. It
is no doubt you will emerge from New Zealand Model United Nations more
equipped to make a difference to your world.

UN+forgettable is a theme that explores those issues that the world tends to
forget. Whether it’s the problems of society that slip our minds or conflicts
that the media chooses not to cover, the world is much bigger that the same
news that constantly gets thrown into our faces. Through this theme, we also
seek to the explore the way that the media controls the narrative of world
history, the fact that bias can influence events and progress, the ethics that
should underpin such a venture.
The topics that we will explore range from the nature of weapons flow and
what happens to the arms that slip between the cracks, to the concept of
cultural erosion and a debate on the nature of what deserves to be
preserved. We aim to explore the link between the world’s past and future.
All whilst providing delegates with a truly UN+forgettable experience.

MAKE THE MOST
OF NZMUN 2018
NZMUN is an experience like no other. Whether this is your first time
attending or your fifth, NZMUN is sure to be a UN+Forgettable experience.
Each conference is as unique as the next, bringing its own flare to this
prestigious annual event.Over the past 7 months the committee has been
working tirelessly to provide an amazing experience. With that being said
there are a few things that you can do to make the most out of NZMUN.
Firstly, prepare for committees and plenary sessions. Our Educations Officers
and Special Rapporteurs have created some really informative documents that
will guide you in finding relevant materials that you can use in debates and
discussion.
Secondly, be open to meeting new people. There will be an incredibly diverse

range of individuals attending NZMUN, people from all different regions and
backgrounds. These are the people that will end up either making or breaking
your conference, so make an effort to get to know them!
Thirdly, listen to the pro tips from welfare. Eat well, sleep well, drink lots of
water and make sure to dress appropriately. Dont be the one that gets sick
and has to stay in bed while NZMUN passes by around you.

Coordinator - Jason Guan
Hi everyone, I'm Jason and thanks for coming to NZ
Model UN 2018! I'm completing an engineering degree
at the University of Auckland. I'm a huge tech nerd
and in my spare time, I enjoy doing my own software
and data science projects.
Assistant Coordinator - Anna Cooper

Hey everyone, I'm Anna and I'm your Assistant Coordinator
for 2018! I study law, film, and bioethics at Otago Uni, but in
my spare time I love going to the beach, attempting to bake,
watching movies, and patting dogs. Looking forward to
meeting you all at this year's conference!
Logistics Officer - Paddy Forde

Hey everyone I'm Paddy. I'm in my third year of a Law
and Business at the University of Waikato. It has been
a blast serving on this years organizing committee
and I hope that you all have a fantastic experience.
Educations Officer - Hark Howard

Hey squad, I’m Mark, one of your two Educations
Officers! I study Law and Education at the University of
Auckland. My special moves in life are water sports,
being posh about coffee and nerding out over politics,
history and fantasy. Can’t wait to see you guys at
conference!

Educations Officer - Nico Van Wijk
Nico van Wijk is currently on an extended gap year
before he starts university in America. In his free time,
he enjoys creative writing and story-rich videogames,
saying often that one should never underestimate the
power of a tale. He was also only just informed that the
intro blurb was supposed to be in first person...."
Relationships Officer - Hye-Song Goo

Hi all, I’m Hye-Song - your Relations Officer. I love
spontaneous road trips, tea and a snowy winter ❄❄Feel
free to come find me during conference for some
relations(hip) advice over hot tea!
Registrations Officer - Zhouai Wang

I'm Zhouai and I'm a second year Biomedical Science
student at the University of Auckland! In my spare
time, I love to travel, take photos, and watch movies.
I have a wide range of interests but UN Youth has
remained a favorite for the past couple of years.
Promotions Officer - Ishan Kokulan

"Hey guys, I'm Ishan and i'm the Promotions officer this
year! I study Law and Commerce at the University of
Auckland and in my free time I like to take photos, shoot
hoops, be a total unashamed sneaker head, lurk the reedits
and play with cool tech"

PRO TIPS FROM
WELFARE
My name is Hannah and I am your Head Welfare
Officer for NZ Model UN 2018!
I hope you’re all excited for the conference! It’s

important that you take good care of yourself
during the conference so that you can make the
most of this great experience! Here are a few tips to
help ensure you have the best experience possible:
Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water – there will be
places for you to refill your drink bottles at the conference, so make
use of them!
Get plenty of sleep –it may be tempting to go out and about exploring
Wellington and spending time with your friends, but make sure you get
a good night’s sleep so that you are well-rested and able to give it your
all during the committee sessions and workshops!
Make sure you eat well and regularly – food is fuel so make sure you’re
having breakfast in the morning, even if you may not usually, and
eating at the conference!
Be kind to each other!
Don’t be scared to take a bit of time out – you can come and see
welfare at any point in time, we are here to help and support you!
We can’t wait to see you in July!

WHAT TO WEAR?
The dress code for the event is business formal which

means: suits, dresses, blazers, dress shirts and pants,
and formal footwear (although please don't wear heels
if they're going to be a health hazard!) Make sure to
wear layers as wellington has been known to be cold
and wet during NZMUN!

UN+FORGETTABALL
The NZMUN Ball is one of the Highlights of the conference.

Hosted at Te Papa in the heart of wellington, this is your
chance to dress to impress. The Ball is on Thursday night
running from 7:00pm to 11:30pm so make sure to plan ahead
for transport to and from the venue. A full buffet dinner will be
provided on the night . There will also be a coat check there so
please dont forget to layer up for the journey.
