Architectural Design-I
Semester – II Sem
Design Brief

Faculty:
Days: Monday, Wednesday & Friday Total: 9hrs/wk

“Architecture is the thoughtful making of space.”

Louis Kahn

Aim: Architectural Design is the foundation of architectural education & is the first level of design
consciousness for the student. A new language is understood from its basics to the level of using
it confidently in creating architectural solutions to simple problems.

Objectives:
 To initiate an awareness of the scope of architectural concerns through orientation
exercises.
 Simple space organization starting with single activity to multifunctional spaces.
 To develop an understanding of space as a derivative of function, & form as a derivative
of space. Design exercises shall provide a platform to apply the integration of form &
function.
 To develop the ability to translate abstract principles of design into architectural solutions
for small problems.
 To derive three dimensional forms appropriate to given function.
 Identification of anthropometrics and average measurements
 Understanding the purpose of human considerations like privacy and convenience,
comfort etc.
 Development of concept through circulation diagrams, figure ground studies etc.
 Visual analysis of Built form

Exercises:

Design of my own space:

Residence design of a Super Hero.

Anthropometrics: Average measurements of human body in various postures: proportions and

graphic presentation.

Minimum and optimum areas for various functions: spaces such as living, dining, bedroom,
kitchen, toilet etc.

Case study of a residence with critical appraisal of various spaces with circulation diagrams.
Design of various spaces integrating form and function like Security Cabin, Grocery Store,
Caravan, Bus Shelter, Milk Booth, Traffic Police Kiosk, Flower Stall, ATM Center etc.

Function & Space- Space as a derivative of function

Design of my own space:

The students are challenged to understand their own space according to the spaces we inhabit
influence how we act and how we feel.
The proposed design is an influential inspiration from the relationship between the humans and
the prevailing surrounding and the spaces
Programme Elements:

There are many different techniques for thinking through these complexities. One of the simplest
places to start is to understand the programme by breaking it into elements.

From a relatively simple starting point, as essentially 'unpack' the programme as develop deeper
into the project, and as need build up more complex understandings of the requirements

Form & Function- Form as a derivative of space

To design a house for a superhero!!!
 Identification of design process to be adopted
 Analysis of activities performed by Super Hero
 Explorations of space & function (sketches)
 3D articulation (models)
 Finalization (single line of plans, sections, elevations)
 Presentation: Plan, 2 elevations, (1:100 scale)

The project wants you to imagine and create a superhero – make a house for the superhero as to
think the superhero will need and like it. As always, the project has the complete freedom to
design the house on land, floating in the air, floating on water or even under water.

Space Requirements:
Sleeping space, Dining Space, Kitchen. Workspace / studio / laboratory, Bathroom and toilet.
Apart from these you can add any other function that you find necessary
The design and the form of the house must have a strong concept and a meaning. The visual and
spatial forms should spring from an original idea and concept of your ow.

Design Requirements:
The challenge is to design and evolution of design an Composition •Aesthetics/• Concept and
Themes • Innovative originality of idea theme Use of materials & colors...etc

Anthropometrics: Average measurements of human body in various postures:

The use of anthropometrics in building design aims to ensure that every person is as comfortable
as possible. In practical terms, this means that the dimensions must be appropriate, ceilings high
enough, doorways and hallways wide enough, and so on. In recent times, it has come to have
particular significance for workplace design, and the relationship

Design Requirements:

To create architectural solutions for simple basic anthropometrics-average measurements of

human body in different postures-its proportion and graphic ... surfaces, geometrical solids
of various forms and groups of forms

Space Requirements:

The application of human factors data, including anthropometric data, to design. Specific
ergonomic information and information related to clearance space required for furniture,
fixtures, and devoted to circulation space; is movement in residence...
Minimum and optimum areas for various functions: spaces such as living, dining,
bedroom, kitchen, toilet etc.

The basic requirement of an enclosed space is to accommodate the standard size of furniture
and end-user circulation to make it functional. This differs from room to room. Keep on reading
to know about how the minimum dimensions and standard sizes play a crucial part in the
designing and execution .

Design Requirements:

Knowledge of standard size of rooms and their location in a residential building is important
for planning of residential construction project. The room sizes and their location provides
spaces for movement, sunlight and natural air for residents
-The room sizes and their location provides spaces for movement, sunlight and natural air for
residents. ... Generally, drawing or living room is the biggest room of the building so that it can
be utilized for some ceremonial function in the house. Size of ... The window space should
be min. of 15% of floor area.

Space Requirements:
The understanding the application of spaces, sizes and forms such as living, dining, bedroom,
kitchen, toilet etc.
SPACES INTEGRATING FORM AND FUNCTION:

Security Cabin.:

These huts are ergonomically designed keeping in mind the utility, comfort and
security of the user

DESIGN PROGRAMa

The program is envisaged as a series of periodic reviews at specific stages of the design process.
All presentations except the final have to be on butter sheets clear and composed keeping a class
audience in mind.

STAGE: I (RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS) group work

 Presentation of design parameters or guidelines of design as understood from analyzing

secondary and primary data sources.
 Secondary data source: Books, internet, codes, standards, articles from periodical.
 Primary data source: Case studies, interview with users.
 Design principles, space and area requirements.

STAGE: II (EXPLORATION IN 2D AND 3D FORMS) INDIVIDUAL WORK

 Presentation of design concepts as a translation of the first review.

 Single line drawings, sketches of views and vistas, scaled freehand renditions of finalized
schemes.
 3D scaled block models in suitable medium.

STAGE:III (FINAL SUBMISSION OF PORTFOLIO COMPLETE WITH RENDERING)

INDIVIDUAL WORK

FINAL DESIGN PORTFOLIO REQUISITES

 Sheet size: A1
 First and second review sheets
 Plans: 1:100/ 200 rendered layout, North line, section lines, key plans, labeled and
dimensioned, levels and areas.
 All elevations in 1:100/ 200 rendered with sciography
 Sections in 1:100/ 200 with levels, heights, labels mentioned properly.
 Furniture detailing for specific departments.
MEDIUM:
Both the portfolios have to be a manual only failing which the portfolio will be rejected.
Drawings for the pin up presentation of case studies, conceptual drawings and site analysis have
to be done either on drawing sheets or butter sheets.
Development of sketches and schemes for various stages has to be done manually only.
