Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Counting Dimes

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): First Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.NBT.7 Identify dimes, and understand ten pennies can be thought of
as a dime. (Use dimes as manipulatives in multiple mathematical contexts.)

Technology Standard Addressed: #3 Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

During this lesson I could address the Universal Design for Learning principals by color coding the content of
the Kahoot. By color coding it will help those students who have trouble focusing or staying on task. Also,
because the lesson is interactive by allowing the students to respond to questions on their tablets it tailors to
the kinesthetic learner. This lesson is also ideal for learners who need a more hands on approach to keep
them on task.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
I will introduce the Student Response Tool by first having a number talk where we will review how we count
by tens. We will review using the counting by tens exercise song. I will then provide each student with a small
bag of coins and we will do a sorting activity where we sort coins into groups. (dimes, nickels, pennies,
quarters) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd5DBkP9avw)

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Students: will access Kahoot and join session using the code provided by teacher on their tablets. Once the
teacher starts the activity students will answer the 8 questions. Once complete students will place their
tablets on their desk and wait for results.

Teacher: will facilitate the activity at a teacher pace. She will start the activity and walk around the room to
ensure students are task. Once everyone has completed the quiz the teacher will provide students with
their results

The activity will take approximately 10 minutes

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will display the results so students can self-assess rather or not they were successful on the Kahoot quiz.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the Student Response activity there will be a whole debrief where we will discuss the results of the quiz.
If there were any indications that a review is needed this would be the time to have a review to address those
misconceptions.

How will the data be used?

The data collected from the Student Response activity will be used by both the teacher and the students. The
students will view the results and self-assess. The teacher will take the data collected to tailor future lessons.
If there are some misconceptions the teacher will create a new lesson using the data to address those
misconceptions. If there are no misconceptions the teacher will use the data to further extend on student’s
knowledge.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity
My personal learning goal for this lesson is to have an alternative to the standard math review quiz. I would
like to see students excited about math which is why I chose to use Kahoot. I like the interactive futures with
Kahoot and think they are great when trying to increase student engagement. At the end of this lesson I plan
to learn new ways to assess student’s math skills and make students excited about math.
Reflective Practice:
I believe that this lesson will impacts students in the following ways. Students will become more fluent in
their skills of counting by tens and identifying coins. I also feel that Kahoot will help to build students
confidence as they are able to see their results in real time. Lastly, because Kahoot is interactive I feel that
students will be eager to learn new mathematical concepts.
