Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Statistics and Probability

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 8
Content Standard Addressed: MCC6.SP.5 Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as
by: a. Reporting the number of observations. b. Describing the nature of the attribute under investigation,
including how it was measured and its units of measurement. c. Giving quantitative measures of center
(median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as
describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the
context in which the data was gathered. d. Relating the choice of measures of center and variability to the
shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data was gathered.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://kahoot.com/

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☒ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I am able to have the students see the game on their phone as well as
the class monitor. The question can be read aloud for anyone with hearing problems. The community and
individual nature of the site is useful. The visuals are also an aid in understanding the material and or
questions being asked.

I will begin with a demonstration of the game and how it works. I will walk through the registration of
one’s device all the way up to starting the game. I will go through a few questions to show the response
method. I will then ask if anyone is unsure of what to do.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will be engaged with the
questions and answers. Following the answering, we will have a discussion about the questions and answers
to assess where misunderstandings are. They will need their phone or some mobile device. Students can
share if necessary. The activity will last around 35 minutes depending on the discussions had.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☒ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? To aid in the class discussion about responses

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? Students will put devices away. A final class
discussion about the activity will happen. Suggestions about how to improve the lesson and things that
worked well will be talked about.

How will the data be used? The results of the questions will be collected. It will be used to help the individual
immediately and the class later on as I review and plan lessons for the future. The individual data is collected
and viewed by the individual. The class can see overall results but not individual ones. I will discuss the data
and relate it to the lesson its self. I will explain the purpose of the anonymous nature of data sharing.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I am personally trying to get quick feedback about
knowledge while creating a lesson that the students actively participate in and make an effort on.

Reflective Practice: I think this is going to be a fun learning day for the students. Combining a lesson with
technology makes the learning experience more autonomous for the student and yields better results. I would
extend this type of lesson weekly to gain assessment and tailor lessons that are differentiated for universal
learning.
