Question 1: Describe Uganda cultural attributes that might affects the operation of a

foreign company doing business there.

Answer:

In international business cultural attributes of home and host countries have some major affects
on performing international operation. In Uganda HG faced some cultural imbalance that make
the implementation of project too much complex. The complexity in Uganda too much higher
communicative languages, nepotism, corruption.

 Different types of communication languages:

Near about 25 million people live in Uganda. Although English is the official language of
Uganda but there are many people who speak only an indigenous language, mainly Bantu or
Nitotic language for the Bugandas, langos, Acholi, Teso and Karamojong tribles. From the
perspective of a foreign company wants to operate their business in Uganda, communication
language is the main problem in international business because of different tribals people in
Uganda speak in different types of languages. For this case a foreign company hires language
specialist personnel for speaking with different people by different languages.

 Lengthy business processes:

Business in Uganda typically moves slowly. For instance, one may wait months to a phone
installed; supplies delivered or operated licenses issued.

 Nepotism is a norm for employment staffs:

The unemployment rate is too high in Uganda because of nepotism in employment staffing. Here
job searching was generally conducted through word of mouth, especially among family
members.

 Restructuring of rules and international laws:

If only company involves the activities of nepotism, it is illegal under U.S.A law. In international
business, the foreign firms want to seek their employees on the basis of marit because profit
maximization is the main objective.
 People are involved with corruption:

Not only the nepotism is a norm but also the corruption is a threat to operate international
business in Uganda. In the world Uganda’s government is considered the most corrupt
government. From the root level to government in all sectors are involves in corruption.
Corruption in root to high level of government make the business process more lengthy &
foreign investors become de-motivated to invest their money in the corrupted country.

 Uganda’s people are too much devout to their religion, beliefs and culture:

Although two third of Ugandans are Christans, there are large numbers of Muslim and different
tribal religions belief that many natural sites (including that the proposed dam) process spiritual
qualities and are scared. The people of Uganda are too much devout to their religion and beliefs
and culture. So foreign company must accept the religion and beliefs & culture of Uganda’s
people.
