Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

To extend and support the learning experiences for all students, I plan to create a variety of questions
including true/false and multiple choice so students with different learning styles can express their
knowledge. Kahoot uses a timer so I plan to set that timer to a reasonable time in order to give every student
a chance to answer the question. Another way I will incorporate Universal Design for Learning is by giving
each student a map that has the continents and major oceans color coded. This will give the students
something to look back at as a resource but will not give them the exact answer so they will need to use prior
knowledge regarding where each continent and ocean is placed on the map.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the Student Response activity, I will introduce the Continents and Oceans by showing the students a
diagram of a world map using the Smartboard. I will have the major continents and oceans color coded
without any labels first. I will begin to start a classroom discussion to see if any students have prior knowledge
of these continents and oceans. After the discussion, I will pass out a graphic organize that has the 7
continents and 4 major oceans. The organizer will consist of a word bank and different fill in the blanks. The
students will have the chance to color it themselves but first the students and myself will fill out the graphic
organizer and label the continents and oceans in the correct spot. As the students and I are having discussion,
I will ask students to come up and drag the labels of each continent and ocean as we are discussing them. This
graphic organizer will help them and can be used as a guide as they play the Kahoot game. I will introduce the
Kahoot after all the students have filled out their graphic organizer and I will explain to the students that it is
a practice game that will wrap up all we have learned throughout the lesson for that day. The students will be
paired up with another peer in order for them to work together and build upon each other’s knowledge.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the Kahoot Activity, the students will be working in pairs to answer 1 questions that relate to the
Continents and Major Oceans we are discussing throughout the standard. The students will get in between
20-30 seconds to answer each question and will be notified if their answers are correct as they go through the
game. For each question, the teacher will read it aloud for all the students and will also showcase the
question on the board. The teacher will also be observing the students and taking notes regarding how the
students are perceiving the information being asked. The materials needed for this activity are going to be
iPads/Laptops the students can use in order for them to play the game. They students will also need their
graphic organizer as a reference in case it is needed. The activity will last about 5-10 minutes. The questions
will only be about 5 minutes but I want to have a class discussion about the activity afterwards and go over
each question to clear up and misconceptions or to recognize strengths.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
• I want the students to be able to follow along while they are playing the game in order for them to
recognize any of their own misunderstandings or strengths. I will then review all the questions at the
very end of the game and have a discussion over each one to ensure the students have a good
understanding of the content.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the Kahoot Activity is complete, I want to bring the class together to continue a discussion about the
game. I want to address any strengths and weakness noted while the students were playing and I also want to
hear from them about how they perceived the questions and game format. Through this discussion, I will be
able to plan for an extension lesson and will uncover any topics that need to be readdressed.
How will the data be used?
The data that will be collected as a result of this activity is the students individual scores and the class scores
overall. I will use this activity as a formative assessment in order to determine anything that needs to be
changed for the next lesson on this topic. I will also use the scores to uncover any misconceptions or
strengths the students are demonstrating. The scores will not be shared with the students or parents because
it is going to be used as just a formative assessment. I will keep the scores to keep track of the student’s

progression through the unit and lesson content. I will use the data anonymously when reviewing the
questions at the end of the game, I want to have a discussion with the class about the questions asked in
order to discover strengths and weaknesses. I will also use the data to differentiate instruction, if a student
did poorly because the questions were timed, I will take this into consideration and create a more effective
and efficient way for that student to demonstrate their knowledge.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
The personal learning goal for this activity is to determine how the students are connecting with the content
and how they are able to process the information being taught. With this activity, I am creating an
entertaining and interactive environment for the students but I am also observing and assessing their
strengths and weaknesses as they perform the task. I believe this activity will help the students learn since
they are having to analyze and answer questions that have a broad range. For example, some questions are
going to be very simple and others are going to be higher-ended which will increase the students level of
understanding. I also think this activity will activate the student’s brain since the questions are timed, they are
going to have to really observe and consider what the question is asking of them.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel as if the activity would impact students learning in a very positive way. I
believe the higher-level thinking and questions from Bloom’s Taxonomy will generate thinking and create
growth within the classroom. I think Kahoot will be a very fun and interactive game for the students, with it
being timed I feel the students are going to love the competition. The timed Kahoot will allow me to observe
the student’s understandings and any misconceptions I will need to fix or address within the next lesson. To
further extend this lesson, I would dig deeper into the continents and the oceans. For example, I would
introduce different counties and states that are included within these continents and I would also introduce
the topic of the different animals that live in the oceans. I would have the students pair up into groups and
focus on a country of their choice and then create an artifact they could share with the class. Other
technology tools that could further enhance this project could be the usage of PowerPoint or Popplet. These
basic and beyond basic productivity tools could give the students an opportunity to create a product of their
choice and would enable them to write important facts and provide pictures in order for the class to get a full
understanding.
