Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Shapes, Shapes Everywhere!

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: MGSEK.G.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and
describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind,
and next to.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.c Use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their
practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://kahoot.com/

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I will read the questions out loud so that all the students are able to
respond as quickly, since some students might struggle with reading the questions independently.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity. Before the use of the SRT activity we will look in the class and describe the location of shapes
in our environment. We will take this same activity outside. Then I will explain that we have a quick quiz that
will have them name and count shapes in certain positions.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The teacher will read the questions/answers
and the students will choose which answer they think is correct.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Student Response and Assessment Tools
If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Show answers
Q1:What is the biggest shape between the trees?
Q2:What shape is between the cat's eyes?
Q3:What shape is above the house's door?
Q4:What shape is under the tree?
Q5:What shape is on the ground? (Hint the shadow)
Q6:What shape do you see in the top, middle picture?
Q7:Examine the house and figure out how many rectangles are on the front of it?
Q8:Figure out how many triangles are inside of the pentagon?

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? So that the students can see why they missed a question, if they missed any.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

We will discuss the various answers, right or wrong, and I will provide the students to explain their reasoning
because there is always a chance that they see something I do not. I will take this time to help them see why
the answer that was listed as correct was the one that was chosen, better yet I will encourage the students to
help each other with this task.
How will the data be used? The data collected from this activity will be used to help me plan activities for
those children who show a discrepancy in knowing their shapes, positions, or even counting skills. I will also
use the aggregate, anonymous data to help the whole class further their knowledge and help them learn. This
data will not be used as a grade this time. I will also use the data to plan individualized lessons to help
children either with where they currently are, or to move to the next level (scaffolding).

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I personally have never used student response and
assessment tools and I hope that they prove to be helpful in guiding my teaching instruction to better fit the
needs of the students. I hope that this shows me where my personal teaching strengths and weaknesses lie.

Reflective Practice: I think that this activity can help the students be able to identify shapes and positions
better and to realize how there are shapes all around us. If I decided to use this as an introductory activity
then I would assign the students the task of using a camera and while they are out with their parents
photograph at least 5 shapes that they see in the environment and then email them to me, at which point I
will create a class book with the photographs to place in the library.
