PERFORMANCE/ACHIEVEMENTS OF DFP DURING THE PERIOD 2008-2012

INTRODUCTION

The Directorate General of Films and Publications is an attached department of

the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It is mainly responsible for projection and
publicity of the policies of the Government of Pakistan at home and abroad through print and
electronic media. The mandate is realized by bringing out publications and making documentary
films previously produced on 35 mm and presently switched on digital system.

The department has a Regional Publications Office at Lahore and Film Wings at
Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta.

FUNCTIONS

i. To bring out regular and adhoc publications.

ii. To produce documentary films.
iii. To supply publicity material to Pakistan Missions abroad, foreign media
and diplomats based in Pakistan and opinion-makers (media persons,
poets, writers, intellectuals, etc) within and outside Pakistan.
iv. Arrange exhibitions of printed material and posters containing glimpses of
Pakistan Movement, Quaid-i-Azam, land and people, tourism and socio-
economic development of the country for image building.

MEDIA PROJECTION AND DFP

DFP shares an exclusive responsibility in the role of disseminating the

documented information within the country and abroad, both based on the government policies
and projecting the progress made in all the fields of development in the country. This
data/information is collected from the concerned ministries and shaped into proper forms of
various publications after passing through adequate editing and skillful printing process. DFP
thus emerges as an entity of authentic source of information and a dependable source to eradicate
any kind of misinformation spread out by adverse elements.

PUBLICATIONS

DFP’s magazines namely Pakistan Pictorial (English), Mah-e-Nau (Urdu), Pak

Jamhuriat (Urdu), Abaseen (Pushto) and Ulus (Balochi) are essential tools in highlighting the

policies as well as activities of the government. The details contained in the articles are very well
researched so that correct data and authenticated facts are made available to the readers. The
articles elucidating the current issues on national and international level are also included to keep
the readers abreast of situations within the country and abroad. The government’s packages like
Gilgit-Baltistan Islahat, Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan, NFC Award, constitutional reforms
were also published. Contributions in these publications are made by renowned writers as well as
VIPs like Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, President Asif Ali Zardari and Minister of
Information, etc.

Apart from regular magazines, following dedicate issues on political & literary
legends were also brought out:-

The Directorate General launched a series of publications in a weeklong activity

attended and participated by a large number of people. Publications were brought out and
launched to commemorate the following events:-

i. Quaid-i-Azam Day – December 25, 2008.

ii. Ist Death Anniversary of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto – December 27,
2008 (Speeches and Addresses).
iii. Khushal Khan Khatak Number – December 29, 2008.
iv. Pakistan – A Pictorial View.
v. Pakistan Chronology (1947-2006) – January 04, 2009.
vi. Ahmad Faraz Special Number – January 12, 2009.

DFP also brought out 3 publications profiling performance of the government for
2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. The publications contained achievements of all the Ministries
and Departments of the government with facts & figures.

A set of booklets titled “Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan” and Prime Minister’s

address to the Parliament was printed, translated in Urdu, Balochi and Pushto and 169,000 copies
were widely distributed among important political quarters in the Federal capital and provinces
of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa and Balochistan.

A special publication “Pakistan-China 60 Years’ Friendship” was brought out

as part of DFP’s contribution to celebrate 60 long years of friendship between Pakistan and
China.

“Dateline Pakistan”, brought out in 2011, contains a panoramic view of

Pakistan. Authenticated figures pertaining to important sectors have also been included to make
it useful for research purpose.

All regular and adhoc publications were widely distributed within the country and
abroad on important occasions/visits. Both internal and external distribution were well over 0.6
million while the sale proceeds touched Rs. 173,000/- approximately.

MISCELLANEOUS PUBLICATIONS

Adhoc publications such as those containing speeches & statements of President

and Prime Minister were printed and distributed to opinion/policy-makers, parliamentarians,
think tanks, press persons etc.

Yearbooks were compiled and printed after taking input of all attached
departments of the Ministry.

“Pakistan: A Pictorial View” – a photo album containing a kaleidoscopic view

of Pakistan’s history, culture, architecture, festivals, nature, society and people was launched in
December 2008. The aim was to encourage the participants of a photo contest held by DFP
earlier.

Pakistan: Basic Facts was updated. The leaflet contains figures pertaining to
economy, health, education, communications and other vital sectors.

“Bhutto Says” A pocket book containing quotes from the speeches of former
Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto depicting his social & political philosophy was compiled and
distributed to important quarters.

Wisdom of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, containing quotable quotes of

SMBB was also printed and widely distributed.

Volumes of Speeches. Speeches and statements of former Prime Minister

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto were compiled in volumes (English & Urdu).
Urdu volume of Mohtarma Bhutto’s speeches was also translated in Sindhi language for its wider
distribution to Sindhi-speaking circles.

President Asif Ali Zardari’s speeches, statements and messages were compiled
and printed in volume besides their translation in Sindhi language. (Detail at Annexure-A).

DISTRIBUTION

This material is being consistently distributed among people from all walks of life
including Federal and Provincial Ministries, Divisions, departments, Parliamentarians, foreign
missions, educational institutions, libraries, non-governmental organizations etc. within the
country and Pakistan Missions abroad. It is a credible source of information and reference for
researchers, academia, scholars, think-tanks, journalists, national and international print and
electronic media. The readership of these magazines has registered an increase after their basic
themes were changed with an objective to bridge the gap between the Government and the
masses.

EXHIBITIONS

A picture and painting exhibition titled “Hamara Watan Hamara Quaid” and a
Mushaira (Poetry Session) was organized as part of Independence Day celebrations in Lahore for
more than a week (2009).

Another 3-day exhibition of rare photographs of Quaid-i-Azam and Pakistan

Movement was arranged at KAMRA in collaboration with PAC. Later, DFP was awarded with
appreciation certificates from the PAC authorities.

A rare 3-day thematic exhibition showcasing achievements of the democratic

government was mounted in March 2010 which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister. As many
as 250 photographs were put on display.

Two special photo exhibitions were held to commemorate the death of former
Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her first and second death anniversaries.
(Annexure-B).

A letter by President Asif Ali Zardari addressed to the Leader of PML (N) was
translated in Sindhi, Urdu & Pushto and widely distributed among opinion-makers, presspersons,
intelligentsia, law-makers, etc.

WEBSITE

DFP launched an exclusive website for projection of Pakistan through

new/alternative media on 14 August 2011. Minister of Information & Broadcasting inaugurated
the event. The website has proved to be a useful online source of information for researchers.

FILMS

Establishment of Digital Studio

The film wing established Digital Studio comprising modern technological devises
including NLE system and MCR, to meet the modern requirement of the production and quality
of documentary films.

Distribution of Documentary Films

i) Approximately 3000 copies of different documentaries on DVD format were sent to
foreign missions of Pakistan through E.P.wing.

ii) One thousand (1000) copies of different documentaries on DVD format were sent to
different Ministries/Departments including non government organizations.

Show of Documentary Films on occasions of National Importance

Film Wing has been showing different documentaries every year at occasions of
National Importance such as:
i) Kashmir Day
ii) Pakistan Day
iii) Independence Day
iv) Iqbal Day
v) Quaid-i-Azam Day

Documentary Films Library

Film Wing is in possession of a valuable film library which contains films of
national and international importance procured through its own and other sources. Films
produced since 1948 are preserved.
