1 Unit description

1.1 Function
The sample probe evaporates sample material by means of arc discharge or spark
discharge. In this process, the released atoms and ions are stimulated to emit
radiation. A fiber-optics directs this radiation to the optical system. Here the
radiation is evaluated.
Data are already stored in the unit's memory. The measured values are compared
with these data. The results are then displayed on the screen.

Safety

2 Safety
Every user of the unit must have understood the present Operating Instructions.
This applies in particular to the safety regulations.

2.1 User information

 Comply with all of the safety regulations. It serves your safety.
 Perform only those maintenance tasks that are described in this manual. Any
further maintenance work (e.g. technical maintenance) or repairs must only
be performed by service personnel that is authorized by the manufacturer.
 Observe all of the safety and accident prevention regulations at all times
when operating and maintaining the unit. This is, for example, DIN EN 61010
or a comparable national standard.
 The safety measures must be checked after every technical maintenance or
repair. This check is to be performed in accordance with VBG4/DIN EN 61010
or a comparable national standard.
 Always have the unit maintained at the intervals specified by the manufacturer
and document the maintenance activities. This serves for maintaining the
operational safety of the unit.
 Never tamper with the safety devices! If you feel that a safety device does not
work properly, shut down the unit immediately.
 Absolutely observe the information labels provided on the unit.
 Use only genuine spare parts for repairing the unit. The use of non-genuine
spare parts will result in the loss of the CE conformity.
 The unit may only be connected to power grids with a protective grounding
conductor.
 If a castor-equipped unit is used on an inclined floor, it may roll away during
operation. Secure the unit while in operation. This applies also when the unit
is on a transport carriage.
 Observe the associated safety regulations when using auxiliary agents and
operating utilities.
 Disconnect the unit from power prior to opening it. The unit is only completely
disconnected from power if the power plug is unplugged.

2.2 Intended use

which the unit has been calibrated by the manufacturer or by qualified technical
personnel.

SPECTROTEST — 04.04.2012 —7
Safety

2.3 Prohibited operating conditions

Operating the unit is prohibited if one of the following conditions applies:
 If the unit is faulty or damaged.
 If the unit is not subject to regular maintenance.
 If the ambient conditions do not comply with the specification.
 If the area where the unit is used is not a commercial/industrial premise.

2.4 Residual risk

This unit has been manufactured in accordance with the state of the art.
Nevertheless, a residual risk cannot be completely excluded.

Warning! Danger of injury

 The analyses generate metal vapors. Depending on the sample material,
these vapors may be toxic, e.g. in case of heavy metals.
 Ensure that protective equipment is worn in such cases, e.g. a breathing
apparatus and extraction equipment. The protective equipment must
ensure that the national threshold limit values in force and/or comparable
national standards will not be exceeded.
 When the unit is switched on, there is a risk of suffering an electric shock
when the electrode is touched or when the sample is removed during a
measurement.
 Such an electric shock is not dangerous to a healthy person. Low
currents and voltages below the threshold values specified in EN61010
are involved here. However, consequential accidents may occur, e.g.
falling down from a ladder.
 The sample should not be touched while a measurement is in progress.
 Avoid any contact with the electrode when the excitation (plasma
generator) is switched on.
 Always shut down the excitation (plasma generator) when working on the
spark stand (stationary spectrometers) or on the sample probe (mobile
spectrometers).
 On mobile spectrometers, the probe can also be disconnected from
the unit, if possible.
 For voltage ranges, see page 9.
 There is danger of burns from the electrode. During normal operation, the
electrode will heat up to several hundred degrees!
 Do not touch the electrode with bare hands even if the unit is switched
off. Use pliers.

—8 SPECTROTEST — 04.04.2012
Safety

 The electric arc in the spark stand or in the sample probe adapter generates
UV radiation.
 Take suitable protective measures (e.g. wear safety glasses) whenever
the spark stand opening or the adapter opening are not completely
covered.

Note
The plasma is ignited by way of a high-voltage pulse.
After the ignition, an alternating voltage (spark mode) or a direct voltage (arc
mode) is applied to the electrode.
The following table shows the respective voltage ranges.

High-voltage High-voltage Burning voltage Burning voltage

ignition pulse, ignition pulse, Arc mode Spark mode
arc mode spark mode

Spectrotest 6-12 kV, typ. 8 kV 1–12 kV, typ. 5 kV 30–60 V, typ. 40 V 20-200 V, typ. 30
TXC03 V

 When the unit is switched on, there is a risk of an electric emission during a
spark cycle, especially if the sample is removed during a measurement.
 Such an electric emission is not dangerous to a healthy person. These
are electromagnetic fields of low intensity. Due to measurement
uncertainties, they can be beyond the limits of EN 61326-1 in some
cases. As a result, radio transmissions in the direct vicinity of the
spectrometer, e.g. the reception of radio broadcasts, may be disturbed
(crackling, image interferences).
 Users of life-sustaining or life-supporting medical devices (e.g. insulin
pumps, cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, EEG or ECG recording
devices, or similar) will not be affected in the case of devices with CE
conformity. However, it is absolutely essential that these operators
contact the manufacturer of their respective devices prior to using the
spectrometer!
