Research Methodology

Research Design

This is a quantitative study that will utilize the descriptive-correlational approach wherein

the status of disaster preparedness among families in Dumaguete City will be assessed. The

socio-economic factors that may have a relationship with the status of preparedness of families

will also be measured.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study will consist of any responsible member of the family 18 yrs

old and above who have experienced and have not experienced natural disasters and lives in

Dumaguete City at the time of the study. Each Purok are represented in each Barangay by using

random sampling technique. The cluster sampling technique will be used to determine the

sample size. Convenience sampling technique will be utilized to select the respondents.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted in 30 barangays of Dumaguete City namely Bagacay,

Bajumpandan, Balugo, Banilad, Bantayan, Barangay 1 (Tinago), Barangay 2 (Upper

Lukewright), Barangay 3 (Business District), Barangay 4 (Rizal Boulevard), Barangay 5

(Silliman Area), Barangay 6 (Cambagroy), Barangay 7 (Mangga), Barangay 8 (Cervantes

Extension), Batinguel, Buñao, Cadawinonan, Calindagan, Camanjac, Candau-ay, Cantil-e, Daro,

Junob, Looc, Mangnao-Canal, Motong, Piapi, Pulantubig, Tabuc-tubig, Taclobo, Talay. In these

barangays some are affected by natural disasters and others are not.
Research Instrument

The instrument that will be used in the data collection is a self-made questionnaire

developed by the researchers. The questionnaire has two parts: the first part is the demographic

profile that will include age, gender, marital status, educational attainment and family income.

The second part contains information pertaining the status of disaster preparedness of families.

The questionnaire will consist of close-ended questions. The questionnaire will also be translated

into the local language and this will be reviewed and approved by a local language expert. An

internal consistency reliability test will be performed and Cronbach’s alpha will be measured to

determine if the instrument developed would really measure the variables that it intends to

measure.

Data-Gathering Procedure

An approval to proceed with the study will be obtained from NORSU Ethics Committee

or other Ethics Committee. In addition permission to conduct the study will be obtained from the

City Mayor and Barangay Captains of the 30 barangays in Dumaguete City. The possible

respondents will be approached by the researchers and the purpose and mechanics of the study

will be thoroughly explained. If the possible respondents will express their intent to participate in

the research study, then a written consent will be obtained.

A self-administered questionnaire or an interview schedule will be employed. The

respondents will be asked to answer either the English or Visayan version. Respondents will be

informed of their anonymity and their right to participate and withdraw from the study anytime if

they don’t feel comfortable answering the questions.


Returned questionnaires will be immediately examined for completeness in their answers

and such will be considered valid for analysis. A code will be assigned to each questionnaire for

further anonymity.

Statistical Treatment Plan

Descriptive and Inferential Statistics will be utilized in this study. Frequency and

percentages will be employed for the profile and socio-economic data of the respondents.

Descriptive Statistics will be used to analyze problem number 1. Chi-Square will be used to

analyze problems number 2, 3, 4 because both variables that were correlated are nominal in

nature. Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) V. 17 will be used to analyze these data.

A significance level of 0.05 will be used to accept or reject the null hypothesis.
