Urban Meyer: University of Florida

Make the players believe you are doing everything you can for them.

Enjoy your successful moments, because they don’t last.

Believe in statistics, they don’t lie.

Schemes have very little to do with winning games.

Don’t make excuses. You either win or you got your {censored} kicked.

How do you win games?

1. Talent (75% of time spent recruiting) Talent is going to win you 6-7 games.
2. Discipline. With discipline you can win 7-8 games.
3. Leadership. 9-10+ wins.
If you don’t have these things, nothing else matters. Schemes mean nothing.
Entitlement- kids want what coming to them. Have to eliminate that.
Don’t let the kids drink the poison. People telling them how great they are.
Bellichick- “You woke up on third base and didn’t even hit the triple.”
No the fault of the players, it is the surrounding people.
Have a plan to win and stick with it. Make sure the plan is infallible.
“Don’t flinch.”

Have a “PLAN TO WIN”

• Play Great Defense. Team concept. Offense can’t turn ball over, play field
position football. Good special teams. Pin the other team
• Goal on offense is to get 2 first downs. Then if you have to punt, you
can pin them.
• Best players on special teams. Team concept.
• Ball security. Win the turnover battle.
• Cover tip, back tip covered by elbow. Squeeze, wrist above elbow.
Everyone coach has to teach the same way.
• If they have 90 yards to score, they will not score a TD 97% of
time. If you give it to them on the +22, they will get a td 80% of the
time.
• Be proactive with it, solve it before there is a fumble.
• Red Zone scoring.
• Every third day Florida works on Red Zone Passing and Runs.
• Situational Football. Practice for certain situations.
• Great Kicking game.
• Every coach has to buy into special teams. It is part of the plan to
win. Coaches and Players must buy in.
• 20 yards total of punt return yardage in 13 games at Florida in 2007.
• Best players are gunners on punt coverage. 6.5 seconds from snap to
fair catch.
• Coverage on kick off and punt team are the same.
• Don’t ask about touching the football unless you are on a special
team.
• Principles of kicking coverage. Don’t allow a vertical return.
o 3 free releasers. Gunners and Missiles
o 4 land mark players. 5yds and 10 yards from returner.
o 2 cut back/contain players
o 2 safeties.
• Landmark players and cutback contain slide with returner.
• Cannot lose contain. Keep returner on inside shoulder. Outside arm
free. Don’t let anyone get outside of you. Contain players keep arm up.
If it gets blocked, you are screwed.
• On a vertical return. Turn hips slightly and squeeze.
• Contain/Cutback player is about 3 yards behind first wave.

Spread Offense
o If you have no big plays (12+) yards you will score 20%.
o 1 big play is 50%
o 2 big plays 80%
o Have to make people miss.

Fundamentals of the spread

1. Equate numbers. Don’t run ball at unblocked defenders. Don’t let pass
rusher come clean.
2. Force defense to defend the field. Spread them out
3. Create Match up issues for defense.
