Camerata Queensland Chamber Orchestra Case Study Audit

For the purposes of this report Camerata Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra will be

referred to as Camerata.

Camerata Enterprise Lifecycle

Founded in 1987 by Elizabeth Morgan OAM the Camerata of St John’s was a tertiary

student chamber orchestra for emerging talented string players. In 2005 after a ten

year hiatus, the Camerata of St John’s re-established as a professional chamber

orchestra under the leadership of Brendan Joyce, a former student of Elizabeth

Morgan’s who had returned from study in the United States. From 2005-present it has

continually grown. In 2005 the business structure of the organisation had not been

established and Brendan Joyce was the only fulltime contractual employee. Camerata

have been in a steady state of growth financially and artistically over the last 13 years.

Camerata have established them as a premier chamber orchestra contributing

significantly to the artistic culture of Queensland. Their artistic collaborations with

companies such as Expressions Dance Company have earned them a reputation as a

versatile and innovative orchestra. Creatively their innovative nature, means that they

contribute to the arts culture in Brisbane significantly. They have collaborated with all

art forms in different ways contributing to a continued growth in Brisbane’s art

culture.

The practical need for a professional Chamber Orchestra in Queensland

Lies in the volume of high caliber string players returning from overseas study

looking for professional orchestral work. Camerata is able to contribute to the

employment of professional string musicians. Creatively their innovative nature,

means that they contribute to the arts culture in Brisbane significantly. They have

collaborated with all art forms in different ways contributing to a continued growth in

Brisbane’s art culture.

In 2017 the Camerata of St John’s re-established their identity and changed their

name officially to Camerata Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra. This disassociation

with St John’s Cathedral, positively affected their applications for funding as having a

religious affinity was negatively affecting their ability to receive funding.

2) An identification and analysis of the business structure, key personnel,

funding strategies and operations

Camerata is an Incorporated Association. A company as an Incorporated Association

operating under the 1‘Associations Incorporation Act 1981’ is legally an entity in it’s

own right. Under the current Queensland Legislation Incorporated Associations that

are governed by a board don’t have legal protection to guarantee the board’s liability,

due to a recent precedent, if the company or business dissipate. As such Camerata in

the near future, are hoping to shift their legal structure to ensure the board is

financially liable in these scenarios. An Incorporated Association once established is

legally separate from it’s members, thus if players and administration team members

of Camerata change, it can still legally exist as an organisation. Incorporating

Camerata meant that it was formally recognised legally, and became its own entity

separate from those who founded it.

Jason Tong- Rehearsal Manager/Camerata Section Violinist

The artistic staff, players, board members and administrative staff are all involved in

the strategic planning of Camerata. Currently there are two full time administrative

staff. For the magnitude of the work the Camerata do each year a two person

administrative team is very small. Many players perform dual administrative and

playing roles within the organisation. This helps the lack of administrative staffing.

Every Camerata musician and board member is involved in the strategic planning

meetings at the beginning of the year. These meetings are designed for everyone to

come together and identify what it is that Camerata stands for and what they want to

be known for. They are constantly establishing ideas and evolving their vision. In

these meetings they discuss targets and goals they want to reach and how near into the

future they can reach them.

There is also an artistic associate meeting at the beginning of the year in which all

musicians get a say in the projects that they wish to do including repertoire.

Funding
Camerata is currently the most highly state government funded arts organisation in

Queensland. They receive Quadrennial state based funding that contributes 18.75% to

their yearly funding. Camerata have a donor funding scheme which has been steadily

growing over the last ten years with many donors moving from the lower donor

brackets to the higher increasingly. This has significantly contributed to their steady

financial growth. Camerata take on a number of commercial gigs each year. These

commercial gig opportunities contribute to their financial stability. Camerata is

currently in the process of applying for Arts Council Funding in the 2020 round of

funding. This would establish Camerata financially further into the future, and allow

them to further their artistic endeavours. Currently as a Queensland state based

chamber orchestra they do not have a competitive advantage over national arts

organisations. To remedy this Camerata hope to take their artistic ventures to different

states. Below shows the financial goals that Camerata have reached thus far, and the

financial goals they wish to reach in the future.

Significant events within the lifecycle that represent successful artistic

outcomes and catalyst for future events

There have been many significant events that have created a catalyst for artistic

progress and successful artistic outcomes over Camerata’s history.

In 2013 Camerata became an ensemble in residence at Queensland Performing Arts

Centre. This significant event resulted in them having a word class venue to perform

in. This partnership most significantly resulted in them being able to have a regular

subscription concert series. This established Camerata as a premier chamber orchestra

with a reputation for excellence as its own entity. This collaboration positively

affected their financial position, as it allowed them to increase ticket sales, although

difficult to do, their increasing positive reputation has seen ticket sales increase

dramatically.

In 2014 Camerata were able to secure a permanent rehearsal and office space at

Merivale Street Studios in South Brisbane. The acquiring of this space, allowed

Camerata to establish them even further. Rehearsal spaces are a costly issue in an arts

organisation so having a permanent residence to rehearse allowed them to grow even

further in their artistic endeavours. Merivale Street Studios became the ideal location

as the administrative staffs were able to move into the office located on the second

floor. Having a home base where Camerata were able to establish themselves

increased the quality of their work, and created a catalyst for a more cohesive

operating arts company.

Recommendations for the future of Camerata Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra

Camerata have established themselves significantly in the cultural and artistic

community. Their reputation for innovative and artistic excellence is undisputable. It

is evident that over the course of the last 13 years they have made intelligent artistic

and business choices that have kept them in a steady bill of growth.

Some recommendations to continue this growth could be to collaborate more in the

education sector within Brisbane. Camerata do significant educational outreach work

with regular regional tours, however this could be extended into the Brisbane

Community. This educational outreach could include having day workshops at

different tertiary institutions. They currently have their Upbeat Internship Program

which offers tertiary students the opportunity to work alongside them for a year, and

this program is significantly contributing to the community.

Camerata’s currently have a String Quartet in Residence, the critically acclaimed

Orava Quartet. Perhaps they could fuse their Upbeat Education program idea that has

already been established with this, and have a student String Quartet in Residence.

They could potentially perform outreach concerts in the Brisbane community,

furthering Camerata’s establishment in the community.
