Unit/Lesson: Food for thought
Topic: eating insects

Lesson aims:
a)aims for the students
 To be able to give answers concerning the theme of eating strange
food;
 To be able to brainstorm on words connected to insects;
 To be able to understand the text;
 To be able to extract specific information from a text;
 To be able to practise on vocabulary connected to insects and the issue of
people eating insects ;
 To be able to explain and give examples concerning different statements.

b) aims for the teacher


 To activate students’ interest in the content of lesson by asking them to
brainstorm on words connected to insects;
 To focus students’ attention on the topic by asking them to read a text to
extract information;
 To get them involved in the lesson by asking them to explain different
statements.

Anticipated problems:
 Students might feel nervous or might find difficulty in explaining the
statements;
 Students might find difficulty in answering questions about eating insects,
they might feel strange.

Previous knowledge:
 Students have discussed in a previous lesson about other types of food.

Skills: Speaking, reading, writing.


Methods: conversation, brainstorm, exercises ( extract information and
choose correct alternative ).
Learning activity: individual work, pair work.
Materials: blackboard, coursebook, pictures.

STAGE/TIME PROCEDURE
I. Activity 1 3’
Aim:Warm up a) Greetings and conversation.
Teacher checks homework.
b) Teacher announces the aim of the lesson, namely the
intention to talk about insects, the reasons why eating
insects is healthy and to practice it by doing some
exercises.

II.Activity 2 10’
Aim: Lead in Teacher asks students about words connected to insects
Brainstorming (to the world of insects) and write them on the
blackboard.
Then teacher writes some new words from the text and
students tries to guess the meaning of them.
Teacher explain to the students the title of the lesson.
Teacher encourages students to talk about unusual food
that others people eat and which is their opinion about it.
The students try to explain using their own words.
During this activity, the teacher shows to the students
some pictures to help them understand.

III.Activity 3 23’
Aim: Tickle your taste
buds a) At this point, the teacher asks the students to scan the
text and answer two questions.
b) The students scan the text again in order to extract
information that will help them to choose the correct
answer to the next exercise.

IV.Activity 4 12’
Aim:Practice vocabularyThe students discuss on different statements, giving
explanations and reasons why they agree or not with a
certain statement.

Homework assignment: 1’
Imagine that you are going to go in a village where people eat insects and
you have to adapt to that kind of life. Write short email about the food and
how you adapt to this food using words like: scorpions, bugs, worms,
spiders, grasshopper.
