30 – QUATRE ÉTUDES CHORÉGRAPHIQUES (Choreographic Studies)

Ballet for percussion ensemble. Composition: 1955. Definitive version for


six percussionists: 1961-63. Initially commissioned by the NDR, Hamburg
Radio in a version for solo performer then expanded to four percussionists
and choreographed in this version by Maurice Béjart, the work was later
developed for six percussionists at the request of the Groupe Instrumental à
Percussion de Strasbourg and the Strasbourg Municipal Ballet. First
performance in its definitive version at the Strasbourg Festival, 8 June 1963
in a choreography by Manuel Parès by the Strasbourg Municipal Ballet and
the Groupe Instrumental à Percussion de Strasbourg (renamed ‘Les
Percussions de Strasbourg’ in 1966: Jean-Paul Batigne, Gabriel Bouchet,
Jean-Paul Finkbeiner, Detlef Henri Kieffer, Claude Ricou, Georges Van
Gucht).

for guitar. Composition: 1955. Commissioned by Narciso Yepes. Dedicated
to Ramon Cueto. First performed in 1961 by Narciso Yepes in Paris.

‘Musical illustration’ for a radio adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel
by Alexandre Arnoux, directed by Bronislaw Horowicz. Composition:
January- February 1956 (instrumental ensemble of 15 performers).
Commissioned by the RTF Musical Illustrations Department (Henri
Dutilleux). Recording conducted by Daniel Chabrun, with actors from the
Compagnie Jean-Pierre Grenier-Olivier Hussenot (published as a disc-book
by Philips in 1957). Broadcast: RTF, 1956 and in Great Britain: BBC 3rd
Programme, 11 November 1957.

by Alain Trutat. Composition: 1956 (chromatic cithara, cithara in thirds of

Musical Illustrations Department (Henri Dutilleux). Recorded with the
participation of Maria Casares and Serge Reggiani. Broadcast: RTF, 1956.
