Known problems/bugs in BRR

1) PCC GIRDER entering mild steel (longitudinal reinforcement in top of girder) does not reduce tensile
stress in service limit state

2) modifying member ends for reduced section area (bolt holes in addition to “hand holes”) does not
reduce RF

3) horizontal shear in gusset plates is calculated in relation to global axis not local axis

4) slab interface parameters (member alternatives>beam details) doesn’t affect RF

5) stringer reactions are not consistent when identical loads are placed on exterior stingers in Girder-
floorbeam-stringer floor system model

6) material selection (i.e. class AA(m) vs Class AA concrete) in girder line superstructure>cross
section…..once changed and saved seems to revert back to default, note: changing default materials
does not solve the issue, solution is to re assign properties such that desired input is 1st in que

7) Mysterious error with load case description/member load assignment, error similar to “Encountered
an improper argument” , changing load case description to capital letter seems to have fixed issue, also
deleting load case description and re-entering seems to work

8) LLDF does not calculate for PCC girders moment and shear (reference bridge no13 Louisa)

NOTE: BOTH TRAVEL WAYS NEED TO BE INPUT OR LLDF will not autocompute

9) intermediate floorbeam moment from DL, sporadically changed after closing program, upon re-
opening , results were approximately ½ without changing loads

10) Make sure to check stringer reactions on floorbeam on exterior stringers are equivalent, may have
to back calculate a load to “fictitiously” put on stringer to normalize

11) PCC girder allowable stresses ….for girders in severe corrosive conditions (see map BDEM p.
178/684), use .0948 (fc)^.5 per AASHTO table 5.9.4.2.2-1……also slab compressive allowable = .6*fc’ per
A 5.9.4.2.1-1?
12)tapered deck (flared girders) and skewed support line (pier) , A 4.6.2.2.2 e. is not applied correctly for
interior beams only, didn’t apply theta (moment modification factor for skew on support line –bent
angle)

13) auto calculate for LLDF uses eg=0 for non-composite steel girders, which makes Kg smaller , which
makes LLDF less conservative…..therefore LLDF needs to be calculated by hand

14) steel girder negative moment –compression flange resistance is using incorrect resistance although
the program does correctly compute this value…..it just does not use it on the governing formula. This
seems that BRR has this bug with exterior girders, however, could be interior as well. This cannot be
over-ridden/corrected as manual hand calcs would have to be applied to all girders at these locations
which is not feasible.

15) Truss model, if panel point dead load is entered in, to not double count self weight of truss member,
the zero density material is assigned to truss members, however this will make truss not run double
truck load case. Instead of zero density, we can set the density with a small value to be able to run
double truck load case.

16) Floorbeam deck reinforcement input will cause problem with analysis (not running).
