OPERATING PRINCIPLE : ENGINE FUSEBOX :

1. Location and description of the engine fusebox

The engine relay unit protects and distributes the supplies of various functions by means of relays, fuses and maxi-
fuses .

Figure : D4EP123D

The engine fusebox (3) consists of two associated modules :

z Module 1 : Module incorporating the maxi fuses (2)
z Module 2 : Module incorporating an electronic card, the fuses and the relays (1)

The main functions of the engine relay unit are the following :
z Distributing the electrical supplies under the bonnet
z Switching of certain actuators under the bonnet
z Transferring of power to the passenger compartment fuse box, built-in systems interface
z Communication on the BODY CAN
z Permitting the acquisition of the signals from sensors under the bonnet

2. Module 1 of the engine fusebox

Module 1 of the engine fusebox assures the following :
z The distribution, and protection by maxi-fuses, of the BAT+ electrical supplies to the components connected
via the main harness
z Supplying of the BAT+ electrical power for module 2 of the engine fusebox

3.3. Operating mode

The electronic part of the engine fuse box has 4 operating modes :
z The "system inactive or standby" mode : While the ignition plus (engine fusebox internal) and RCD+ supplies
are below 5,5V
z The "power latch" mode : The ignition plus and RCD+ supplies are below 5,5 V and the main relay is
controlled by the engine ECU
z The "system reawakened" mode: all of the functions are active ; Communication on the multiplexed BODY
CAN is effective
z The emergency mode in the event of absence of communication on the BODY CAN

3.4. Functions
Description of module 2 of the engine fusebox :
z Distribution and protection of the BAT + and ignition plus electrical supplies to the components connected to
the main harness and the engine harness
z Protection of the BAT+ and ignition plus electrical supplies to the components in the event of a short circuit
to earth of these connections or of an internal short circuit of these components or of excess current due to
abnormal operation of the component (prolonged jamming of an electric motor, for example) by melting of
the corresponding fuse
z "power latch" electrical supply to the engine ECU and some of its actuators (maintaining of the engine ECU
supply after the ignition plus has been switched off)
z Cutting off of the fuel pump in the event of a vehicle impact (triggering of the airbags)
z Protection of the circuit in the event of inversion of the battery terminals
z Control of the electrical supply to the starter on the order of the engine management ECU
