Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools

Lesson Idea Name: “Building numbers with base ten manipulatives”

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.NBT.1 Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this
range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE-3: Knowledge Constructor – Students critically curate a variety of
resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others. Students:
d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and
pursuing answers and solutions.

Selected Technology Tool:

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level): (Level determined by the specific lesson idea)
☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☒ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): UDL can be addressed in many ways. The use of math manipulatives is
a concrete representation of the math in this lesson and all students benefit from the use of manipulatives.
Partner groups will be utilized for students that need that added support, for example English Language
Learners. While working at this station, students that desire to stand may do so. Paper and pencil are
provided at the station for students who also want to write the number. The PowerPoint can be paused by
the student to extend work time.
Lesson idea implementation:
Additional materials needed: base ten blocks (flats, longs and cubes/units). This review lesson will be
incorporated into stations in the classroom. This will be introduced as a review for the students; place value
has been previously covered. This particular station should take 10-15 minutes to complete.
Using the class blog, students will review a narrated power point instructing them to represent two and three
digit numbers using the manipulatives available at the station. The PowerPoint will present to the students
numbers and will give them time to construct the numbers using the base ten blocks. While students are
working this station, the teacher will be working in small groups at her table reviewing place value with
students.
To extend learning to a higher level, students will be able to construct numbers larger than 120 with the
manipulatives (120 is the highest number included in this standard).
The lesson/station time will conclude with students grouped on the rug in the front of the room. Using
whiteboards and markers, the students will write the appropriate number on their whiteboard that
represents the number the teacher displays using the base ten blocks. This is when the teacher will assess
student learning. This informal assessment will be used to inform instruction and arrangement of small
groups as necessary to further learning at the teacher’s table during small group time. Feedback will be
addressed individually with each student.

Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools
Importance of technology: While not critical to this lesson, using a website-creation tool is helpful for the
students on many levels. Doing so increases their engagement and helps to further their learning when
utilized across content areas. Another benefit of incorporating a website-creation tool is that the student is
able to access the material from outside the classroom. The one caveat to this however, is the necessary
devices/internet connection must be available to the student outside the school. This lesson could take place
in the classroom without the use of a website-creation tool; there would be nothing lost in the absence of a
website-creation tool. I am utilizing a power point as a part of the flipped classroom.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Incorporating the use of a classroom blog always need to be addressed
with the principal and the information technology specialist of the school prior to implementation. Most
schools have policies in place and must be adhered to by all personnel. Classroom blogs that allow comments
should always be moderated by the teacher prior to them being posted. For some areas of the blog that may
contain sensitive information, teachers can password-protect these tabs which allows only parents and
students with the password to access; doing this allows another wall of safety for students, as well as the
teacher. Publishing student work always presents its own set of issues and must be adhered to according to
the school policy. In addition, parents must consent or opt-out of these permissions; having the necessary
permissions safeguards teachers and students. Protecting students is always the main focus, as well as
teaching them how to be responsible digital citizens.
Reflective Practice: Activities incorporating the use of technology and the level to which it is integrated can
be helpful for students provided they offer authentic experiences. To further extend this lesson, students can
journal about it in their math journal to extend learning and applying of base ten principles. Other technology
tools that could enhance this lesson is the use of student response system through the use of an in-class
activity or game, such as Kahoot!.
