Paul, a Pastor
and his Wife, Elizabeth,
the Associate Pastor, Joshua,
a church Elder named Jay
and a Congregant named Jenny or Jennifer
or Jenn.
WHEN
WHERE
America
HOW
A NOTE ON SONGS
Singing ends.
make us one,
makes us a body,
because when we are one body,
we see something
we cannot see
by ourselves.
Make us whole.
Take away our fear.
Give us strength,
watching
waiting,
life.
ever
lasting.
In the name
and in the blood
of Jesus.
Amen.
Pause.
Music ends.
They are:
A Powerful Urge
and
A Radical Change.
The title appears on the screen: "Part 1: Where
Are We Today?"
PASTOR: Part 1:
Where are we today?
Well
We are
here.
Where is here?
"Here" is this
church,
this big,
enormous
building.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
20, 30 people
then 500.
So,
we built this,
this sanctuary,
built it from the ground up.
And how ever much we thought it was going
to cost,
it cost that and many times over.
And we were in
way over our heads.
That
was 10 years ago,
10 years from today.
And you stayed,
and you paid,
and together we prayed
that someday we would finally free ourselves
of debt.
There is a crack,
and if we don't fix that crack,
it doesn't matter how solid this building is,
we
will
crumble,
and we will
fall in on ourselves.
Paul,
that is the most beautiful woman you have
ever seen. And my self said to its self: well
you better do something about it.
And I looked back down the length of the
plane and I saw her sitting on the aisle. She
was far away, at the other end of the airplane.
Had to lean to see her, could barely catch her
eye. I took out a little scrap of paper, and took
out a pen. And I wrote down,
grace.
Pause.
PASTOR: I was--
oh about
two weeks ago, I was
that boy,
the body on fire,
Convulsively.
I cried.
I said,
God, I don't understand.
And he said, That's not your problem.
And I said,
No,
And I said, No
not really.
And he said,
There is no little man.
There is only you
and your fellow man.
You wanna see Satan--?
there's your Satan.
You wanna see Hell,
you look around.
the distance
is you.
It's me.
an insurmountable distance
where there is no distance at all.
PASTOR: Go ahead.
Brother Joshua...
Associate Pastor Joshua stands, takes a microphone.
Pause.
Then, reading from a list.
Dear Lord,
We bring to you members of the congregation,
who are ill. Their bodies have failed them,
but even so, we know you will not.
Mary Rafferty,
Helen Mounts,
Abe Higginbotham,
Maxine Judson,
Peter Stanford,
Bethany Tallis,
Sandra Coleman,
Agnes Silver,
Amanda Stapp,
Tiffany Leveroux,
Rachel Stein,
and Earl Browne.
In the name,
and the power--the cleansing power--
of the holy blood of Jesus ...
Amen.
Pause.
Goes to return to his seat.
But then, stops.
I ...
PASTOR: ...
ASSOCIATE: ...
Satan is real.
And we believe in Hell
because the Bible tells us Hell is there,
that Hell is the price we pay for sin
PASTOR: where?
PASTOR: Yes.
ASSOCIATE: ...
PASTOR: ...
PASTOR: yes
PASTOR: show me
PASTOR: yes--?
okay
"Let him warn them, so that they will not also
come to this place of torment."
PASTOR: which is
ASSOCIATE: Hell
Matthew 5, verse 22
PASTOR: yes--?
Here it's:
PASTOR: but it
PASTOR: sorry
go ahead
ASSOCIATE: ...
PASTOR: ...
ASSOCIATE: 15:22
ASSOCIATE: yes
ASSOCIATE: yes.
PASTOR: sure
ASSOCIATE: SO
PASTOR: so?
PASTOR: ...
ASSOCIATE: ...
PASTOR: So...
ASSOCIATE: ...
PASTOR: because--?
ASSOCIATE: it's
PASTOR: what
ASSOCIATE: God's.
And God's law is just,
because we are fallen,
an' we are sinful, and we do
we do go into markets
and we do set off bombs,
and we do kill one another.
from Hell.
PASTOR: But
all
PASTOR: in Christ
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
ASSOCIATE: it says
because of Christ
all are made alive.
ASSOCIATE: ...
PASTOR: "especially believers." Which is
to say,
you don't
have to
believe.
It says that--that's
what
it actually
says.
A beat, a meaningful pause, almost as though
Joshua really is checking inside to see what God
wants him to do.
ASSOCIATE: ...
PASTOR: ...
And then:
PASTOR: yes--?
PASTOR: Then
you're free
to leave this church.
I release you.
or
Okay?
And I wait.
Pause.
Pause.
And I pray.
Pause.
Pause.
Music stops.
ASSOCIATE: ...fifty
PASTOR: Fifty?
PASTOR: okay.
PASTOR: okay
ASSOCIATE: Thousands
PASTOR: I see
Pause.
ELDER: yes
ELDER: ...yes.
ELDER: but
PASTOR: sure,
in many ways, yes
ELDER: Let me remind you:
Joshua is your spiritual son.
You saved him.
PASTOR: he did
PASTOR: ...
ELDER: So
I hear you.
ELDER: right.
ELDER: I think I do
ELDER: yes
PASTOR: afford
ELDER: yes
PASTOR: I do
ELDER: But at the same time, we had a
congregation that was here every Sunday
and was growing, exponentially and so
slowly but surely, the place got paid off.
ELDER: no
ELDER: no
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: SO
now see
all
Hitler is in Heaven.
PASTOR: yes
PASTOR: ...yeah
that's right
But I mean...
think about it
CONGREGANT: no
why?
You see?
So my advice to you
is to be patient.
To sit with it.
To pray.
To have an open heart.
And the understanding
will come.
Okay?
CONGREGANT: Okay
CONGREGANT: just
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
PASTOR: I never
Is that it?
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
I'm sorry.
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: can we
CONGREGANT: why?
PASTOR: I am.
PASTOR: I don't.
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
ELDER: ...
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
And the silence goes on for a bit.
Pastor is awkward.
Maybe there's hemming and hawing here.
And it goes on a bit.
And maybe the Choir leaves, or portions of the
Choir leaves.
But Jenny stays.
But then she lowers her head, she nods.
PASTOR: ...
CONGREGANT: ...
PASTOR: ...
WIFE: hey
Pause.
PASTOR: I say
WIFE: maybe
WIFE: No.
WIFE: Yes.
PASTOR: oh sure,
thank you, I, no, yeah, that's--I appreciate
that,
WIFE: right
PASTOR: because
WIFE: okay(?)
PASTOR: I think so
And I think
if you were to speak
to the women in your group,
it could do a lot to help,
to help them see the value
in what I'm talking about.
I think it could help keep
more people from leaving the church--
it's startin' to feel sorta like our church has
sprung a leak
WIFE: So--
PASTOR: ...
WIFE: ...
PASTOR: ...
WIFE: ...
WIFE: no.
PASTOR: oh
WIFE: ...
PASTOR: ...
PASTOR: uh, no
PASTOR: yes
PASTOR: ...
PASTOR: selfish?
WIFE: yeah
PASTOR: how???
PASTOR: okay
WIFE: and some of the parents of some of
those classmates
talk about you in front of their kids.
And the kids come to school,
tell her that her daddy is going to Hell.
Did you know that?
PASTOR: no
Or,
I stay
PASTOR: correcting?
WIFE: ...
WIFE: me too.
WIFE: I do.
PASTOR: Of course
WIFE: you
PASTOR: yes
But
PASTOR: ...
She takes her seat on the stage.
Enter the Associate.
a bad Christian.
ASSOCIATE: choosing
PASTOR: yes
And I said,
"Then just say you believe, say it with me
I believe in Jesus, and I believe he died for my
sins, say it with me."
and she said
"I would like to say I believe,
but if I did it would be a lie"
I said,
"But maybe that's enough--
Say you believe in the hope that as you say
you believe you will believe
and maybe you'll truly believe."
And she said,
"Honey, I am going, I am leaving this earth,
and I will not spend my final breath,
sayin' a damn lie."
PASTOR: ...
ASSOCIATE: so just
show me.
PASTOR: ...
Show me.
...
PASTOR: he says
PASTOR: he says
I wonder
I wonder
might be a time,
when
WIFE: ...
insurmountable.
WIFE: ...
WIFE: ...
Lights out.
