Narrative

The City Agriculture Office has made significant progress in terms of increase
production, empower farmers and fisherfolks and promoting sustainable
agriculture. Capitalizing on the inherent skills and ingenuity of the farmers, private
and government support services in the City are continually implemented to
strengthen the agricultural value chains and to help achieve transformative
agricultural growth. Capacitating both farmers and stakeholders is one of the keys
for continuous growth and development of the sector.

A six (6)-days capability building and study tour by the City Agriculture Office was
conducted last December 19-24, 2017 in Region 4-Rizal. The activity aims the
following: (1) expose the staff on Agri-Tourism Project to be able to learn the scope
and opportunities for the farmers in our locality, (2) to observe the best practices
of these Agri-tourism farms that might be applicable in the City and (3) to examine
the importance of agro-tourism and define a suitable framework in view of
marginal and small farmers.

The Bureau of Soil and Water Management (BSWM) at Brgy. Cuyambay, Tanay,
Rizal was the first destination of the group. During the visit, the group had the
chance to experience the actual preparation of substrate used as food for
vermicomposting, it is a very good source of organic fertilizer. Also, the group had
the chance to learn the best practices done on sloping agricultural area. It
prevents soil erosion while utilizing the area for high value crop production and
this method can be duplicated in our agricultural area.

Then after the group proceed to Kahariam Realty and Farm Inc., a certified Organic
Farm Producer by OCCP (Organic Certificate Center of the Philippines) and accredited
Agri-Farm Tourism found in Barangay Adya, Ibaan, Batangas. The farm promotes
eco-friendly ways of producing their own food with minimal cost and educating
students on the importance and benefits of having clean, pesticide free vegetables,
and a healthy lifestyle. Their best practices will serve as guide in establishing our own
farm tourism that not only cater healthy lifestyle but also a clean environment.

Lastly the group visited Costales Nature Farms located in Majayjay, San Pablo
City, one of Gawad Saka awardee by the Department of Agriculture. The farm
also promotes healthy lifestyle through organic farming and as an agro-tourism
sites. The group had the chance to pick and taste an organically produce
products in the farm.

The City Agriculture Staff believe that they were equipped with new knowledge
and learnings gained from the six-day activity and the objectives were achieve.
