WI/E3.2 Organise writing in paragraphs C
Paragraphs are used. The division between the first and the second is logical, but the
second and third are more confused in their organisation. Each of these paragraphs has
general comments about England followed by some personal information. A better
arrangement would have been to have one paragraph for each of these topics.
Further work on paragraph structure would be of benefit.
Wt/E3.3 Sequence chronological writing C
The first paragraph demonstrates the use of chronological sequencing. Then is used
correctly, and sometimes late appears to be an attempt at some time later. The learner
would probably benefit from learning a wider range of discourse markers.
Sentence Level
Ws/E3.1 Use complex sentences eM
There is one example of a correctly formed relative clause in I'm from France where I was
born. Most sentences, however, are strings of simple sentences divided by commas.
Attempts at more complex sentence structure lead to omission of verbs or problems with
word order (e.g. the first sentence of paragraph 2, and the first in paragraph 3).
Since the learner appears not to be entirely secure with compound sentences, and is only
beginning to attempt complex sentences, this area needs to be a priority on the ILP.
Ws/E3.2 Use correct grammar for level C
There are examples of correct use of grammatical forms which are at Entry 3 in the
curriculum. There are errors in the use of will instead of would, and an example of article
omission in long time.
WS/E3.3 Use correct punctuation for level eM/C
Although commas are used in places where a full stop would be appropriate, this
appears to be because of problems deciding on sentence boundaries, rather than confusion
about the function of the full stop. Capital letters are used at the beginning of most
sentences, but are omitted in two places. There is an example of correct use of a semi-
colon.
Word Level
Ww/E3.1 Spell correctly common words and key words C
Spelling errors appear to be the result of interference from French (informatique, manage).
Elsewhere, common words are spelt correctly, and there are examples of correct spelling of
more complex words (opportunities, community).
Ww/E3.2 Produce legible text
The handwriting is clear and legible.

Text Level

This is an interesting piece of writing and your meaning is clear. It would be better to re-arrange
some sentences, so that each paragraph just has information about the topics I have shown.

Sentence Level

You have made a good effort to use complex and compound sentences. However, sometimes you
miss out important words or use the wrong word order. Also, you sometimes end the sentence in
the wrong place. I have marked where they should end.

Writing Task A

From a young age, I’ve always wanted a career in teaching. At first I wanted to train as a
primary school teacher but after volunteering in my local primary school while attending
college I decided that teaching in a primary school wasn’t the career I wanted to go into. One of
the main reasons for this decision was because I felt most of the teachers time was spent dealing
with learners behaviour issues.
When I heard that my local centre needed somebody who could teach Somali, I volunteered to
start a class. This gave me the opportunity to try something new and it would also give me the
chance to give back to the community.

It is important for women in our community to improve their level of literacy however not
everyone has the chance to be educated which makes me feel grateful to have had the
opportunity. If the centre had a well equipped computer room, it would make it easier for me
to help them improve their skills. All the women in the class are keen on improving their ICT
skills as most of them have young children who are all constantly using the computer at home.

Providing the women in the class with ICT facilities is one of my main goals. The centre hasn’t
got any ICT equipment for learners to use. As a group we have decided to raise money through
a centre fundraiser to help purchase computers for the learner’s to access while at college. All
the learners in the centre will be able to use the computers.

What have you learned during this period?

In my job I work as a photographer. I have been taking pictures of people, architecture and
landscapes. During my first six months of a new job I have been learning how to take a good
frame of picture. How should proper photo look like. As a result of this, my pictures look
more like paintings than photos. In my work I have been learning how to properly use
computer graphics programs.
In which areas do you feel you still have more to learn?
In my opinion I should still learn how to use graphics programs.
To be an excellent photographer I should know many solutions in different programs. I would
also like to know more about work with light of any time of the day and night.

What have been the most difficult aspects of the job or course for you?
At work as a photographer mostly I am using only my own experience with camera. I haven't
completed any courses in this area.
As a consequence I have some problems with technical aspects.
What is more I have just my own camera. To take a better pictures I need to buy more
advanced equipment. Currently I don’t have enough money so I am working and I am
learning patience.
What do you most enjoy about the job or course?
In my job I enjoy the most that my creativity can be useful.
At last when my work is ready I like to browse my creation. Sometimes I am changing it
again. It is never perfect. In spite of this I like to think that people enjoy it.

Making a comparison of lifestyles in the two different countries I would like to recall the
example of Poland and England. I would like to make this comparison in topics: general
standard of living, importance of possessions, home life and entertainment and holidays.
Starting I would like to say a few words about the general standard of living.
Nowadays most of the polish population lives in blocks of flats. Owning a single family house
in town is the indicator of a luxury. The opposite situation is in England where people are
living in detached houses. In recent times, fashion is moving to apartments.
In the second place discussing the topic importance of possessions, I notice that in England
person who working in any profession is seen with respect. Whereas in Poland lack of respect
is noticeable for occupations such as laborer, shop worker or hairdresser. In these
occupations salaries tend to be less. In contrast to conditions in Poland, the highest earning
individuals have appropriate education.
Analyzing family life I come to the conclusion that Family life in Poland and in England is
similar.
Currently, family models is 2 +1,rarely 2+3.
Women after childbirth return to work and increasingly occupy high positions. Children
spend time playing on computers, but they also have organized extracurricular activities. On
weekends the family spends time at home, visiting relatives or on the walks, in the cinemas or
in restaurants.
Concluding the report I would like to mention only the difference that exists in both countries
in terms Entertainment and holidays. In Poland families spend more time together than in
England.
Multigenerational family meets every holiday. In my opinion the background of this issue lies
the difference of cultures. In contrast to the polish culture dominated by a collectivist culture,
in England, feels a more individualistic approach.

Task three
You have been finding it very difficult to study recently because of the noisy behaviour of
your neighbours. Write a letter to your personal tutor, explaining exactly what the problem is
and asking for advice about how to solve it.
(About 150 words)

Dear Tutor,
I am writing to you because I have been finding it difficult to study.
I cannot focus on learning, or my homework because every evening I can hear loud music
from outside.
Recently I have been living in new flat. The area where I live is beautiful, unfortunately I have
some problem with my neighbours. They have a party every evening. One day I told them,
that I need quiet time for my learning. They promised me that they will be more quiet but
they are not.
Furthermore I am working during the day – in effect I can have my learning time only in the
evening. Obviously I want be good student but taking into account the situation, I cannot.
I am desperate. I do not see options for my learning time. Please, could you advice me what
should I do in that situation? Have you got some idea for good solution?

Your sincerely,
Marta

- What happened in the college

Hi Bob,

How are you mate? We haven't met for a long time. If I remember well we
met on my birthday last year. I'm writing to tell you about learning English
language in the college in England. Maybe you know, I really need a Level 1
English exam certificate for my diploma. I know you have a same situation like
me, so you need to take the exam as well. I was thinking I write to you what
was my experience here in the college.

Maybe you remember I was learning English in Hungary. I think the two kind
of colleges are really different. The teachers in Hungary could explain the
difficult things in the Hungarian language. Here, of course is impossible. I think
this is not a big problem, because in my opinion the teachers is really
professionals and well educated, so they can explain nearly everything.
At the moment I really enjoy the school, because I can meet with lot's of
people from many countries. Already I have a couple of fiends from my class. I
remember, when we are firs time tried to speaking with each other, that was
terrible. I had to use my hand plenty of time when I wanted to explain
something. For my friends situations wasn't easier too. It was pretty funny, but
already we can speak each other.
I think that is the best here, that I have to use my English knowledge every
time, I have no more choice.
This situation really useful when somebody want to learn a foreign language.
My advice to you, have to start to learn in the college

Zoltan
