Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Concept mapping in Statistics – What parameter is addressed in the claim?
Content Area: Statistics
Grade Level(s): 11th and 12th grade Statistics

Content Standard Addressed: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.IC.B.5 Use data from a randomized experiment to

compare two treatments; use simulations to decide if differences between parameters are significant.

Technology Standard Addressed: 4a Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas,
testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.

Selected Technology Tool: Popplet

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): http://popplet.com/

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students have access to any type of adaptable technology -- Large print
and auditory options for visually impaired. Closed caption for hearing impaired. Adaptable seating options
for those with attention disorders. Adaptable keyboards for those with processing disorders. Tutorials of
instruction posted on blog for those with processing disorders.

Lesson idea implementation: The Popplet concept mapping application will be used to assist in the
understanding of when to apply the appropriate hypothesis test in testing a claim. The equipment needed to
utilize the Popplet application is any computer, tablet, or mobile device. The students will initially be
introduced to hypothesis testing and parameters of testing claims in Statistics through teacher lessons. The
teacher will utilize the Popplet application in and out of the classroom setting. The teacher will also post links
to get to the software on the blog with a session on how to use Popplet.
Students will be able to use computers that expand to large print and hit the sound button for students with
visual difficulties. Headphones will be provided for those need the auditory element. Adaptable keyboards
will also be available for students who have cognitive issues and process better with keyboards in alphabetical
order. Since students are creating their own information in the concept map, then it becomes more relevant
to the material they are learning. Teachers have access to the student’s work and can ensure they are in line
with the standards.

Reflective Practice: The most difficult part of testing hypothesis claims is determining which test to use and
conduct. To help in decision making, the students will create the concept map and determine which
approach to take in testing claims for the parameters discussed in class for the unit covered. Having the
students build the concept map involves them the student in the evaluation process and logic of the concept
development.
