Orthoprosthetic Technical Aids (6 ECTS Elective Learning): 4th year, semester 2.

The wide variety of existing orthoprosthetic techniques have been established as a vital
resource for the treatment of a wide spectrum of diseases.
OT has been used traditionally, these techniques as a basic therapeutic tool in the treatment of
various diseases of the hand, trauma, burns, rheumatic diseases, neurological injuries, ...
Through this course aims to show students the wide range of techniques included in
orthopraxy, and its application in the treatment of some common diseases of the hand and
upper limb.

COURSE GUIDE TO THE SUBJECT:

Orthoprosthetic Technical Aids
Prerequisites: None

GENERAL GOALS

General objectives of the course:

- Incorporate effectively and timely orthotic treatment as a therapeutic resource to create
orthoses adapted to occupational requirements, allowing individuals a better quality of life,
with greater autonomy and comfort.
- Integrate knowledge of this discipline with other areas of intervention specific to occupational
therapy.
- Develop criteria that allow you to design, prepare and give indications for use of a brace,
according to the requirements of the patient, within a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Understand and efficiently manage materials and tools orthotic workshop.

Conceptual objectives. At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of biomechanics and pathology in the orthotic treatment.
- Manage biomechanical concepts and apply them to the design of an orthotic.
- Designing different orthoses.
- Manage different types of materials used in the manufacture of orthotics.
- Knowledge of the application of a variety of upper limb orthosis.
- Apply ergonomic considerations in patient management during the preparation of an orthotic.
- Apply Therapist ergonomic considerations in the use of tools during the making of an orthotic.
- Know the indications for use and care of orthoses, as well as control and monitoring in the
orthotic treatment.
- Understand the use of tools in a workshop in bracing.
- Develop an intervention plan orthoses

Procedural objectives. At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Apply theoretical knowledge of design and prescription of orthotics to daily clinical practice.
- Develop skills to solve problems that may arise during the design of an orthotic or during
orthotic intervention plan.
- To apply the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge to generate new ideas and designs
appropriate to different types of pathologies of the hand.
- Communicate and transmit information about the use of orthoses to people without
knowledge of the subject (users, families, carers, ...)

Attitudinal objectives. At the end of the course the student will acquire:
- Ability to work independently, make decisions and solve problems in the course of an
intervention plan orthoses.
- Knowledge about the importance of good management of human and material resources
within an occupational therapy service
