Dear Elena,
I have now read through your poems and
thought you might appreciate a brief response
about some of the best poems…
HAY(NA)KA 4: Intriguing. It promotes an
imaginative responsive from the reader. ‘Being
punished for their March love’ leaves one
wondering.
HAY(NA)KA 5: The English is rather
unclear—but the colour play is subtle.
LAMIA: Very ‘alive’ this one—it’s spare and
effective. The last line might possibly benefit
from suggestive punctuation: ‘It’s just a
body…’
MINE: The effect of speed you want might be
achieved by attention to visual layout. Each
line could be indented from the margin from
the one above.
EZRA POUND TRIBUTE: Fine—and easier
to read than much of Pound’s convoluted
thought!
JOYS: Aquinas punchline is superb.
I WANT TO DO: This, together with I’M
NOT WHAT I SHOULD BE, make up the
most immediately personal of the poems in
this collection. This one is the more successful
of the two—the other is too obvious and rather
screams at you.
HOW THE HAND COMES: This was my
favourite poem and the most assured in this
collection.

Dragă Elena,
Am citit toate poemele tale și m-am gândit
că vei aprecia concisul meu răspuns asupra
câtorva dintre cele mai bune poeme...
HAY(NA)KU 4: Interesant. Încurajează un
răspuns imaginativ de la cititori. „Pedepsiți
pentru dragostea lor de Martie” te pune pe
gânduri.
HAY(NA)KU 5: Limba engleză este puțin
neclară – dar jocul de culori este subtil.
LAMIA: Aceasta este foarte „vie” – este
frugală și eficace. Ultimul vers ar putea
beneficia de pe urma punctuației sugestive:
„Este doar un corp...”
MINĂ: Efectul vitezei pe care îl dorești
poate fi obținut de planul vizual. Fiecare
vers poate fi zimțat de la margine până la cel
de deasupra sa.
TRIBUTUL PENTRU EZRA POUND:
Frumos – și mai ușor de citit decât multe
dintre gândurile întortocheate ale lui Pound!
JOYS: Poanta cu Aquinas este superbă.
VREAU SĂ: Aceasta, împreună cu NU
SUNT CE TREBUIE SĂ FIU, alcătuiesc
cea mai imediată și personală fațadă dintre

preferat și cel mai convingător din acest
volum.
INSTANCE: This I also really liked, and
found the final line the best moment in
everything I read.
Congratulations! I will say this though—you
need a better translator. There are occasional
problems of sense and language that comes
close to being meaningless, as well as some
words which do not actually exist.

CULTURAL PROFILE
Nicholas Gayle was the Head of
Classics at Exmouth Community College
before becoming seduced by the poetry of
Lord Byron and changing direction in life. He
is the author of Byron and the Best of Poets
(2016), the only full study of Byron’s
engagement with the work and thought of
Alexander Pope; described by Pat Rogers as
likely to be “the standard treatment of the
topic for a long time to come”.
The second book freshly published this
year is Byron and the Sea-Green Isle (2018)
which is devoted to the study of Byron’s last
complete long poem, the comparatively
neglected The Island. It is much more than a
monograph, however; aside from biographical
considerations, it illumines aspects of study
that embraces feminism, racial politics and
social considerations in relation to the
INSTANȚĂ: Mi-a plăcut și de acesta, și am
găsit ultimul vers cel mai minunat moment
din toate pe care le-am citit.
Felicitări! Însă am să spun asta – ai nevoie
de un traducător mai bun. Există câteva
probleme ocazionale de înțeles și de limbă
care se învecinează cu absurdul, la fel cum
sunt anumite cuvinte care nu există.

Nicholas Gayle a fost Directorul
