Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Universal Design for Learning allows for lessons to be extended to all
students in the classroom based on students’ preferred modalities.
Engagement: Provide individual choice and autonomy options. Allow for collaboration opportunities. Assist
with coping skills and/or provide strategies for doing so.
Representation: Provide understanding in different languages, as needed by non-native speakers. Activate
background knowledge. Provide other means for displaying of information.
Action & Expression: For an introductory lesson in video, the use of assistive technologies, in this case closed
captioning, would be helpful for students with auditory challenges. Offer levels of support based on student
needs.
Lesson idea implementation: (Prior to this lesson, students saved images and videos that they wanted to use
to create their iMovie; students were instructed that length of finished video is to be 2-3 minutes).
Students will create their iMovie over the course of two class periods. The teacher will show the students an
example video , made using iMovie, to start the lesson. Following the movie, the teacher will give a brief
tutorial on using iMovie. As a whole class, teacher will walk students through the process, assisting students
as necessary. At the end of the second lesson, when students’ videos are complete, students will work in
pairs to “edit” each other’s videos and offer suggestions, if necessary.
Based on students’ finished video, Teacher will assess student learning, which will inform future steps to take.
When assessing student videos, teacher will look at length of video, transitions, content (was it content-

centered?), and overall mechanics and appearance. After final assessment of student videos, Teacher will ask
students to post their videos to School Tube (proper permissions on file from parents).
To conclude the lesson, Teacher will play all videos for students to see classmates’ work. Written feedback to
students will be provided in students’ planners.
To extend learning to a higher level, students can create their own content-specific video working in groups.
Importance of technology: Injecting the use of multimedia authoring tools is important for student
engagement and awareness of the proper use of technology. The purpose of this lesson is for students to
author their own video, so the technology used in the lesson is vital to the lesson. Not using the technology
indicated would mean the lesson could not happen in the fashion intended by the teacher. To complete the
assignment, students will publish their video to School Tube.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: (1) Teacher will ensure that proper permissions/consents from parents
are one file and that internet sites used are acceptable according to policies dictated by the school district. (2)
It is important that learning is supported by the integration of technology. The mere presence of technology
into a lesson does not automatically elevate a lesson, but rather, how the technology is incorporated and how
it benefits student learning that is crucial; does it increase LoTi and Blooms higher thinking? (3) The
magisterial protocols and policies are always adhered to and students use of internet does not infringe on or
jeopardize their safety. The importance of digital citizenry is stressed in every lesson.
Reflective Practice: This type of activity is a great avenue for increasing student engagement and
participation. The use of multimedia and the act of publishing content increases LoTi and allows for an
authentic, technologically rich learning experience. This lesson is an introduction to video, and the
possibilities of incorporating video in future lessons are limitless. To further extend this lesson in video, the
use of video could be used across content areas. For example, students could create a math review video
highlighting a particular math concept or skill.
