ASSIGNMENT NO-2
(Superelevation ,Extra widening ,circular curve)
1. Superelevation provided to the road surface at a horizontal curve is 5%.How much should be the outer
edge of pavement be raised against the inner one if the width is 7m and the pavement is rotated about
inner edge?

2. The radius of the curve is 140m.The designed speed is 60kmph and the designed coefficient of lateral
friction is 0.15
a) Calculate the superelevation required if the lateral friction is assumed to develop.
b) Calculate the coefficient of friction needed if no superelevation is provided.
c) Calculate the equilibrium superelevation if the pressure on the inner and outer wheels should be equal.

3. The design speed of highway is 80kmph.There is horizontal curve of radius 100m.Calculate the
superelevation needed to maintain this speed. If the maximum superelevation of 1 in 15 is not to be
exceeded.Calculate the maximum allowable speed on this horizontal curve.

4. Calculate the superelevation required on a road curve of 240m radius. The road is operating dominantly in
mixed trafiic condition. The design speed is 80kmph.The coefficient of friction is 0.15.The road is passing
through the rolling terrain.

5. How much should the outer edges of pavement be raised with respect to the centre line on a two lane road
designed for mixed traffic at a speed of 65kmph on a horizontal curve of radius 160m if the superelevation
is obtained by rotating the pavement with respect to a) Centre line b) Inner edge .

6. Calculate the maximum permissible speed on a horizontal curve of radius 125m of a highway designed
for a speed of 65kmph to carry mixed traffic if the super elevation is not exceeded 7% .

7. The radius of horizontal curve is 100m.The designed speed is 50kmph.Assume required data to calculate
a) Superelevation required if lateral friction is to develop.
b) The coefficient of friction neede if no superelevation is provided.
c) Equillibrium superelevation if the pressure on inner and outer wheel should be equal.

8. The radius of horizontal curve is 100m.The designed speed is 60kmph.The coefficient of lateral friction
is 0.17
a) Calculate the superelevation if full lateral friction is called to play.
b) Calculate the coefficient of friction needed if no superelevation is provided

9. A two lane road with desogn speed of 90kmph has a horizontal curve of radius 500m.If the pavement is
rotated about the centre line and width of pavement of curve is 7.5 .Design the following elements
a) Rate of superelevation of mixed traffic.
b) The rise of outer edge from centre of pavement

10. A radius of 250m has to be provided in a locality due to site restriction in a national highway with a
designed speed of 100kmph.Design superelevation. Should there be restrict in the speed ?

11. Calculate the amount of extra width required on a horizontal curve of radius 300m on a two lane
highway. The design speed is 80kmph.Assume wheel base 6.1m

12. Calculate the amount of extra widening to be done in a horizontal curve of radius 150m for the road with
design speed of 100kmph .The road has 6 lanes and the length of wheel base is 8m.

13. Find the total width of pavement on horizontal curve for a new national highway to be aligned along a
rolling terrain with minimum radius.Assume necessary data.

14. Calculate the elements of circular curve for R=150m and deviation angle (α)=50°.Given a neat sketch and
show all elements.

15. While measuring angle by theodolite at a certain deviation point by setting zero along proceding deviation
point the reading was equal to 230°40’45’’.The radius of circular curve to be provided was 200m.Calculate
the elements of curve for this deviation point.
