4- PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION :
The base metal on each side of the weld shall be free of weld spatter, surface
irregularities, or foreign matter that might interfere with the examination.
The couplant (oil, glycerin, cellulose gum, etc) shall be of suitable viscosity and acoustic
impedance, which allows the transmission of the maximum quality of ultrasound energy
and reduces to a minimum the dead band. The same couplant shall be used for calibration
and for examination.
6- EQUIPEMENT :

Probes :
The choice of probe will depend upon the weld geometry , thickness and the weld
surface profile . In our case , the operator should use :
- A straight beam probes :(transmitter – receiver) 2 MHZ or 4 MHZ . for base
metal examination .
- Angle beam probes : (60° , 70° or both) 2 MHZ or 4 MHZ : For sweeping weld .
- Ultrasonic reference block : Type 1 ( See Fig.1 )
- Ultrasonic reference block IIW : for construction of DAC curve (See Fig.2)
- Two coaxial cables .

7- ULTRASONIC EXAMINATION :
The method of calibration of the flaw detector and probes shall be in accordance with
British standard BS 4331.
Page:5/8
62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00
Sensitivity shall be based up on the use of DAC, constructed from the side drilled holes
SDH in the appropriate reference block BIIW (see.1figure 2) . The calibrated gain setting
required to establish the DAC at peck amplitude of 80% full screen height shall be
recorded for each probe . This is the primary reference sensitivity .
8- EXAMINATION LEVEL :
Level 3 examination shall be in accordance with table 6 of BS 3923 for butt welds
in plate pipe and the scanning sensitivity shall be in accordance with table 2 of BS 3923.
9- ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA :
Ultrasonic acceptance levels applicable to ferritic steels and weld metals shall be in
accordance with table 5.7.2 of British standard BS 5500.
For and between nozzle and additional circle, acceptance level shall be class S2 as per
BS EN 10160.
The test report (see attached report Annexes 1) shall contain the flowing
information as a minimum requirement :
- Contract Name
- Contractor Name

62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00
1- Scope :
This standard provides the procedure to be employed for the continuous method
magnetic particle examination of ferromagnetic welds and adjacent base materials using
the yoke technique, using wet particles.
It is intended for use on work governed by the codes listed in paragraph 2.0 of
this standard.
2- References :
BS 6072
BS 5500
3- Personnel :
Personnel performing magnetic particle examinations to this standard shall be
qualified and certified as Level I and Level II ISO EN 473 or ASNTTC1A Level II.
Level II certified personnel shall interpret test results.
4- Equipment :
Electromagnetic yokes will be used.
6- Equipment calibration :
For yokes, the magnetizing force shall be considered adequate it :
a) Each alternating current electromagnetic yoke has a lifting power of at least 10
lbs, at the maximum pole spacing at which it will be used.
b) Each direct current or permanent magnet yoke has a lifting power of at least 40
lbs at the maximum pole spacing at which it will be used.
7- Materials :
Magnetic particles color contrast.
The following color contrast magnetic particles or their equivalent shall be used :
Page:3/7
62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00
- Wet particles
Magneflux : N°9CM Red (prepared aerosol) Ardrox : Black (prepared aerosol)
The color of the particles shall be selected to provide adequate contrast with the item
being examined.
8- Surface preparation :
9- Technique :
Typical precleaning agents which may be used are detergents, organic solvents,
descaling solutions, paint removers, vapor degreasing, sand or grit blasting.
Page:4/7
62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00
magnetic particles shall be applied by spraying over the area to be inspected during the
application of the magnetizing field current, (continuous technique).
The area under examination must be observed during the application of the
magnetic particle powder the detect the formation of indications.
Yoke method : AC Yokes shall be used.
11- Examination coverage :
Examination shall be conducted with sufficient over lap to assure 100% coverage
at the test sensitivity 2 separate examinations shall be carried out at each area tested.
The magnetic lines of flux in one examination shall be approximately perpendicular to
the line of flux in the other for example :
a) When positioning a yoke longitudinally adjacent a weld, a minimum over lap of
inch shall be maintained between subsequent positions.
b) When positioning yoke transversely across the weld, prod spacing exceed 8’’
c) When examining a large surface area of base metal it may necessary to establish a
grid system to assure that the entire area requiring examination is covered.
12- Post examination cleaning :
All surfaces shall be cleaned of magnetic particles after examination.
14- Records :
As a minimum, the following information shall be recorded :
a) Job number.
b) Weld or area examined.
c) Weld joint or part identification
