62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00

‰ Probes :
The choice of probe will depend upon the weld geometry , thickness and the weld
surface profile . In our case , the operator should use :
- A straight beam probes :(transmitter – receiver) 2 MHZ or 4 MHZ . for base
metal examination .
- Angle beam probes : (60° , 70° or both) 2 MHZ or 4 MHZ : For sweeping weld .

- Two coaxial cables .
- Couplant :

A suitable liquid such as gel, glycerin, cellulose gum or water mixture of a suitable

consistency shall be applied to the surface under test . However, it is essential that
the same coupling medium is used for calibration of equipment and test purposes.
On completion of testing, the couplant shall be removed from the examined surface
The maximum surface temperature when using conventional couplants shall not
exeed 50°C.

longitudinal wave technique to detect laminar reflectors that could interfere with the
intended, directed sound wave propagation . All area contouring laminar reflectors shall be
marked prior to weld examination. Base materiel discontinuities that exceed the limit of
ASME VIII shall be brought to the attention of the engineer or the inspector.

7-3- Weld examination :

APPENDIX 1 :

- Magnetic particle examination report.

Page:2/7
62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00

1- Scope :
This standard provides the procedure to be employed for the continuous method
magnetic particle examination of ferromagnetic welds and adjacent base materials using
the yoke technique, using wet particles.
It is intended for use on work governed by the codes listed in paragraph 2.0 of
this standard.

2- References :
BS 6072
BS 5500
3- Personnel :
Personnel performing magnetic particle examinations to this standard shall be
qualified and certified as Level I and Level II ISO EN 473 or ASNTTC1A Level II.
Level II certified personnel shall interpret test results.

4- Equipment :
Electromagnetic yokes will be used.

Magnetizing units for electromagnetic yokes shall be capable of producing alternating

current, direct current, or both.

5- Magnetic particle field indicator :

A magnetic particle field indicator shall be used to determine the direction of the
magnetic field .

6- Equipment calibration :
For yokes, the magnetizing force shall be considered adequate it :
a) Each alternating current electromagnetic yoke has a lifting power of at least 10
lbs, at the maximum pole spacing at which it will be used.
b) Each direct current or permanent magnet yoke has a lifting power of at least 40
lbs at the maximum pole spacing at which it will be used.

7- Materials :
Magnetic particles color contrast.
The following color contrast magnetic particles or their equivalent shall be used :

Page:3/7
62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00

- Wet particles
Magneflux : N°9CM Red (prepared aerosol) Ardrox : Black (prepared aerosol)
The color of the particles shall be selected to provide adequate contrast with the item
being examined.

8- Surface preparation :

The surface to be examined may be in the as-welded, as-rolled, as-cost, or as

forged condition, however, it there are surface irregularities which could mask
indications or unacceptable discontinuities, surface preparation by grinding or machining
or other methods will be necessary.

9- Technique :

Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be examined and all

adjacent area within I inch shall be cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, lint, scale,
welding flux, weld spatter, oil or other substance which could interface with the
examination.

Typical precleaning agents which may be used are detergents, organic solvents,
descaling solutions, paint removers, vapor degreasing, sand or grit blasting.

The surface to be examined shall be throughly dried before beginning the

examination.

Drying of the surface may be accomplished by normal evaporation or by using

forced air.

10- Sequence of operation :

The area to be examined will be sprayed with the appropriate white background
magnetic particle testing paint when required to give adequate colour contrast Wet

Page:4/7
62350-S-675-00-VD-MM-0512-00

magnetic particles shall be applied by spraying over the area to be inspected during the
application of the magnetizing field current, (continuous technique).
The area under examination must be observed during the application of the
magnetic particle powder the detect the formation of indications.
Yoke method : AC Yokes shall be used.
11- Examination coverage :
Examination shall be conducted with sufficient over lap to assure 100% coverage
at the test sensitivity 2 separate examinations shall be carried out at each area tested.
The magnetic lines of flux in one examination shall be approximately perpendicular to
the line of flux in the other for example :
a) When positioning a yoke longitudinally adjacent a weld, a minimum over lap of
inch shall be maintained between subsequent positions.
b) When positioning yoke transversely across the weld, prod spacing exceed 8’’
c) When examining a large surface area of base metal it may necessary to establish a
grid system to assure that the entire area requiring examination is covered.
12- Post examination cleaning :
All surfaces shall be cleaned of magnetic particles after examination.

13- Interpretation of results :

Adequate illumination shall be provided to ensure proper evaluation.
Indications will be revealed by retention of the magnetic particles. All indications are
not necessarily defects however, since excessive surface roughness and magnetic
permeability variations (such as at the edge of heat affected zones) may produce similar
indications which are not relevant.
Defective conditions are actual or real openings in the surfaces of the material such as
cracks, laps, porosity, incomplete fusion… etc, any interruption in the normal physical
structure of the material (weld or base metal) which will cause detectable magnetic
particle indications.

14- Records :
As a minimum, the following information shall be recorded :
a) Job number.
b) Weld or area examined.
c) Weld joint or part identification
