Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Greetings. If you are here at the Shrine for the first time, welcome! We are very accustomed to having
first-time visitors here at the Shrine and will do whatever we can to make your experience here a positive
one. Here are some things that typically surprise newcomers here.

1. We hear a lot of confessions. Priests here at the Shrine hear several hours of confessions every day,
even on Sunday. There aren’t many places in the country that do that.

2. There are 27 Franciscan friars who live here. Again, there aren’t many religious houses on the East
Coast with a lot more religious living in under one roof. Some of the friars who live here are fully engaged
in work outside of the Shrine. For example, one works in a Catholic school, one does hospital chaplaincy,
and two are doctoral students at Boston College.

3. The annual budget here is $5 million dollars. Sometimes the reaction to that is, “How can that possibly
be? It’s only a church!” We do some expensive things here, especially in the area of social services. Two
examples: We provide weekly groceries for 450 families and we have a medical clinic for homeless
women. Also, take a good look at the building as you leave…at its highest point, it’s eleven stories tall
and runs the complete block from Arch St. to Otis St.

4. The Arch Street Band, which provides worship music at the Shrine, is at seven Masses each weekend,
plus whatever special events that we happen to have. And, by the way, they are first-class, professional
musicians. Most of them have been with us for some time now. The Director of Music, Mark Emery, is
the longest tenured lay staff member here at the Shrine.
Have a great visit here. Peace and all good things!

Dear Friends,

May the Lord give you peace!

Some months ago I wrote to you in my capacity as Guardian of the Franciscan Friar community about Fr.
Joe Quinn, OFM. I am happy to write to you once again about Fr. Joe, this time to tell you that he has had
a slow yet good recovery. Fr. Joe is feeling well enough to occasionally preside at mass and hear
confessions so you will once again see him around the Shrine. Fr. Joe and all the friars are grateful to you
for the prayers you offered for him and for your kindness over these last few months. Be assured that you
remain in the prayers of all the friars.

Sincerely,
Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM
Guardian
