Overview
This section contains information on unpacking, installing, and maintaining the 90449 dual-
channel bedside printer module.
Performance Verification
The 90449 printer module receives data from the bedside monitor and must be installed in a
monitor or module housing to operate. You can plug it into the monitor/module housing while the
monitor is ON without disrupting the monitor.
When you first install the module into a monitor/module housing, administer the following
performance verification procedure.
Note:
The monitor must be monitoring a parameter (ECG, NIBP, etc.) for you to complete this
procedure.
Insert the module into the monitor/module housing and verify that the printer is operating normally.
1 Verify that the monitor displays the keys in the Monitor Setup and Recorder Configuration
menus. Refer to Printing Directory on page 2-3 for the proper display.
2 Initiate test recordings:
• Manually from the bedside monitor.
• Automatically through an alarm violation.
This completes the performance verification procedure for the printer module.

Loading Paper
When the printer module is out of paper, a high pitched beep sounds every eight or nine seconds
and the PAPER OUT light flashes.
Note:
When the unit is out of paper or is off-line, it will ignore any new print requests or alarms that
would normally start a printout.
The printer module has a slide-out plastic tray that accepts packets of folded and perforated
thermal paper (Z-fold paper).
Caution
Removing the entire printer module from the bedside monitor to load paper will cause
an immediate loss of all print requests waiting to print on the module.

paper feeding. Make sure this “cue” mark faces out and is located at the bottom edge when you
are loading paper into the tray (refer to Figure 2-1).
Each printout starts at the Z-fold perforation. No blank sheets are placed between successive print
requests.

Overview
Note:
• Never touch electrostatic-sensitive electronic components without following proper
anti-static procedures, including the use of an ESD wrist band and mat. An
electrostatic discharge from your fingers can permanently damage electronic
components.
• All static-sensitive electronic components are packaged in static-shielding bags.
Retain the bag for repackaging the component, should you need to store it or
return it to Spacelabs Medical for any reason.
• Cleaning, preventive maintenance, and safety checks should be performed
annually and following any product disassembly/assembly. Preventive
maintenance and safety checks must be performed by trained personnel only.
Cleaning/Disinfecting
Warning
• Use only recommended cleaning solutions, or you may void the
manufacturer’s warranty.
• Harsh chemical agents degrade plastics and will compromise the safety of
the device.
• Disconnect the equipment from the patient and the electrical supply before
cleaning.
• Do not allow liquid to enter the interior of the module or monitoring
equipment.
• Do not immerse the equipment or cables in water or cleaning solutions.
• Do not autoclave.
To clean the exterior of monitors, modules, and cables:
• Prepare the cleaning solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Wet a clean cloth with the selected cleaning solution.
• Remove excess liquid from the cloth and squeeze dry.
• Wipe exposed surfaces of the equipment and cables.
• Remove any soap residue by gently wiping with a clean damp cloth.
• Wipe dry with a clean dry cloth.
3-1
Bedside Printer Module — Service Manual
Note:
Over time, repeated use of a chlorine bleach solution may cause some colors to fade.
Tape adhesive can be removed with Spacelabs Medical adhesive tape remover pads
(P/N 392196-001).
Questions and concerns about cleaning issues should be directed to a Spacelabs Medical field
service engineer.
Preventive Maintenance
A Spacelabs Medical field service engineer should check the module for acceptable equipment
performance and electrical safety at least once every 12 months. There are no internal
adjustments to perform on this module.
Visual Inspection
Use the latch on the lower portion of the module to remove it from the monitor. Inspect the
connector on the rear of the module for bent or damaged connector pins. If the module has been
damaged in any way, a Spacelabs-qualified repair person should check the module for acceptable
equipment performance and electrical safety.
Hardware/Mechanical Check
Verify the following:
• The unit is clean.
• All screws are tight.
• The connector pins are not damaged.
• The case is not damaged.

Maintenance
With extended use, paper dust can accumulate on the paper sensor and cause false “paper out”
indications. This sensor should be cleaned monthly in high-use installations, and at least every
180 days in normal-use installations.
To clean the paper sensor:
1 Remove the paper tray from the printer module.
The paper sensor is located on the inside wall of the printer, as shown in Figure 3-1. It is not
necessary to remove the printer from the monitor/module housing to perform this procedure.
2 Gently remove any accumulated dust with a clean cotton swab or blow off with clean, dry air.
3 Reinstall the paper tray.

Performance Check
The 90449 bedside printer module receives data from the bedside monitor and must be plugged
into a monitor or module housing to operate. It can be plugged into a monitor while the monitor is
ON without disrupting the monitor.
Administer the following performance check procedure to confirm that all printer functions are
performing properly. The monitor has at least one parameter active (ECG, NIBP, etc.) for you to
complete this procedure.
3-3
Bedside Printer Module — Service Manual
Insert the module into the monitor/module housing and verify that the printer is operating normally.
Refer to the Ultraview SL Operations Manual (P/N 070-1150-xx), located on CD-ROM
P/N 084-1101-xx, for specific operating instructions.
1 Verify that the module internal self-tests complete normally. When these tests are complete, the
module prints a strip showing a bar of diagonal test stripes, followed by the model number,
software version number, and current date (refer to Figure 3-2).
2 Initiate a test recording manually from the bedside monitor. Verify normal operation.
3 Initiate a test recording manually from the Graphic Trends menu. Verify normal operation.
4 Initiate a test recording automatically through an alarm violation. Verify normal operation.
This completes the performance verification procedure for the bedside printer module.
Disassembly/Assembly Procedures
1 Remove the four screws from the sides of the unit (two on each side), so that you can remove
the outer covers.
2 Remove the two screws above and below the DB-15 connector, so that you can remove the
recorder control unit (RCU) PCBA.
3 Carefully disconnect the 25-pin connector (J3) located on the under side of the RCU PCBA.
Be sure to note the proper orientation so you can reassemble the unit correctly. J3 is keyed to
prevent improper connection.
4 Do not disassemble the unit beyond this point. The RCU PCBA is the only field-serviceable
component inside the module.
5 Reassemble the module by performing these steps in reverse order.

CMOS RAM, watchdog timer, and program memory.
5-1
Bedside Printer Module — Service Manual
Processor
• The RCU provides hardware interface between the bedside monitor and the thermal printer
assembly.
• The PCBA interfaces to the bedside monitor through a synchronous data link connector
(SDLC).
Driver
• The driver turns ON and OFF the processor-controlled UNIT OFF and PAPER OUT LEDs.
• The driver controls the beeper.
Watchdog Timer
• The watchdog timer initializes the RCU during power ON.
• If the processor does not access the watchdog timer within the time-out period, the timer
re-initializes the RCU.
5-2
Bedside Printer Module — Service Manual
Memory
Circuit Description
• The RCU contains 32 kilobytes of static CMOS RAM for temporary data storage.
Program Memory
• The RCU can have a maximum of 32 kilobytes of program memory in EPROM.

Circuit Description
The thermal recorder assembly cannot be repaired or replaced in the field.
The thermal recorder assembly performs the following functions:
• Takes raw data from the RCU and formats it for paper printout by the thermal array.
• Monitors thermal recorder assembly errors and sends the information to the RCU for action
(Reset).
• Monitors and controls +12 V for the thermal array print head.
• Processes control lines for UNIT OFF and PAPER OUT LEDs.
• Processes the three (or four) front-panel controls — STOP, SLOW, and CONTINUE.
• Processes print status signals — Paper Out and Paper Tray Not Inserted.
