competitive advantage of shipbuilding sector of Bangladesh. Western Marine Shipyard was
formed marine profession specialized in ship repairing and export of marine ships. The company
was incorporated with Bangladesh as a private limited and company and from inception was
engaged in shipbuilding and reparing. The government of Bangladesh seek to reduce traffic
congestion by developing water ways of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a developing nation and for
that the economic condition is improving day by day. To distribute necessary goods and raw
material from Chittagong to different parts of the counry smaller ships and cargos are used.
Western marine shipyard being flexible helping to meet this change of demand for ships and
cargo. Govenrmeny of Bangladesh has offered tax breaks for importing equipment and materials
without paying duty since the local demand has increased. Which helped to WMSL to have a
standard situation when the global economic condition was not good. Bangladesh has increased
its international fishing boundary. Private fish boat owners placed orders for addition vessels and
the gradual increase of demand. Container Vessel demand increasing day by day with a view to
reduce logistics pressure on roads by increasing more fluid logistics infrastructure. The move
was designed for taking advantage of domestic growth opportunity while rest of the world was
struggling.
So from above context we see that WMSL is having a significant competitive advantage in this
competitive market. By focusing properly on increasing demand of small ship cargo they can
outstand in the market and will be in a dominating position in the market. Foreign investment
might increase in this sector. By bringing difference in shipbuilding wmsl can excel in market.
Focusing more on building eco friendly ship will be smart move for them since they are already
well recognized for their quality and cheap cost.
Shipyards in Bangladesh is facing high financing charges as compare to foreign Yards. Different
sort of taxes has increased product cost. Manufaxctuiring a ship might require 2 years so
financing for a longer period might be expensive. As a result WMSL incusrs morecost compare
to foreign competitors. Tax are implied on products importe from abroad. Which is added to
product cost. Goveernment is trying to reduce tax on this situation so that the product cost
decreases day by day and encouraging banks and other sectors to finance them with low interest.

WMSL have a structured supply chain process. There are some certain stages in its process.
Globally we know that the supply chain is designed proportional to the product. WMSL starts its
purchase after they get order from buyers. Buyers demand is monitored in an accurate way.
WMSl at first design BOQ inorder to ensure necessary equipments , price and procurement time
needed for ship production . According to specific timeine the company purchases necessary
materials. WMSL places requirement of the suppliers according to the demand of buyers.
Different market prices are taken into account and better deal is selected from them. After getting
the quotation the cost of the project is determined. Foreign procurement is monitored by director
of supply chain and local procurement by purchase department. Raw materials are collected from
different parts of Europe, Singapore and so on. Lead time is generally 90 days. Minimum raw
materials are kept in stock to ensure maximum responsiveness. The company tries to follow JIT.
50% materials for production purpse of WMSL is collected from Bangladesh. It provers that the
shipbuilding industry of Bangladesh is established to a great extent. WMSL believe s that it is
important to maintain good relationship with suppliers, To ensure smooth production process
different suppliers are monitored. Alternative suppliers is always ready. The company maintains
regular contact with suppliers before LC is issued. Advance of payment is in general given to
local suppliers. Payment from buyer are recievend according to contracts. There is a specifici
schedule fpr it. Revenue is recognized as percentage of competition of vessels. Lack of gas and
electricity hinders the production process. Government need to monitor that. So in a nutshell the
overall supply chain of WMLS is collecting necessary material needed from suppliers? They also
tries to ensure minimum cost to ensure better profit. Suppliers are assigned according to the type
of raw materials buyer wanted. Then design is made. The design is the overall layout of the
product. According to the design cutting of steel is done. After receiving the steel plates at
shipyard ship building begins. Once all blocks are erected they are ready to weild . Wielding is
carried out on block joints.
So WMSL supply chain is an structured system. Quality is ensured in its phases and proper time
is maintained. To compete in global market there is no alternative of proper supply chain and
there must be a flow. We have also seen necessary materials are kept in stock to be responsive.
