ACKNOLEDGEMENT

This research venture has been made possible due to the generous co- operation of various persons. To
list them all is not practicable, even to repay them in words is beyond the domain of my lexicon. This
project wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my teacher Mrs. Alka Mehta, Faculty member,
H.N.L.U. , who had always been there at my side whenever I needed some help regarding any
information. She has been my mentor in the truest sense of the term. The Library and IT staff have also
been kind enough to let me use their facilities for research work. I thank them for this.

ABSTRACT

In this project report, death penalty has been discussed. Within the world of justice there is perhaps no
area as highly contested as that of capital punishment. In the modern era, the question has again and
again been raised: should we continue to use the death penalty, as a punishment for some crime? The
death penalty is a highly controversial practice in modern times. While many countries have outlawed it,
some practice capital punishment on the state level. The most severe of all sentences: that of death.
Also known as the death penalty, capital punishment is the most severe form of corporal punishment as
it is requires law enforcement officers to kill the offender. It has been banned in many countries. In the
United States, an earlier move to eliminate capital punishment has now been reversed and more and
more states are resorting to capital punishment for serious offenses such as murder.
