90343 Telemetry Transmitter SpO2 PCBA Field Replacement Procedure

This document provides instructions for replacing the SpO2 PCBA (P/N 670-0916-01) in Spacelabs Medical
90343-05 multiparameter telemetry transmitters. Only persons authorized to service the 90343-05 should perform
this procedure.

CAUTION:
• Operation of digital telemetry transmitters is authorized and controlled by the Federal
Communications Commission (or your national telecommunications authority). It is
essential that the unit be maintained to factory specifications. Since several adjustable
components are exposed while this replacement is performed, extreme caution must be
used to ensure that these adjustments are not disturbed. At the end of these installation
instructions, the transmitter should be functionally tested. Any transmitter failing this test
needs an alignment procedure performed using a spectrum analyzer and frequency
counter, or it may be returned to Spacelabs Medical for alignment.
• Correct torquing of the housing cover screws is essential for proper performance of the
housing cover gasket. A torque wrench with the correct torque setting must be available
(refer to Tools Required below). Do not attempt this replacement unless this torque wrench
is available!
• New slotted-head screws are provided with the replacement kit to secure the transmitter
enclosure. The three 5/8-inch screws used in the electronics compartment are partially
coated with a nonconductive material to improve ESD immunity of the transmitter.
• Observe precautions for handling electrostatic-sensitive devices!

!
• Never touch electrostatic-sensitive electronic components without following proper antistatic
procedures, including the use of an ESD wrist band and mat. An electrostatic discharge from your
fingers can permanently damage electronic components.
• All static-sensitive electronic components are packaged in static-shielding bags. Retain the bag
for repackaging the component should you need to store it or return it to Spacelabs Medical for
any reason.

Tools Required
• Torque wrench (with flat bit), 3 in/lb (34 cN/m)
• Torque wrench set (with Phillips bit), 1.2 in/lb (11-14 cN/m)
• Small flat screwdriver
• Anti-static equipment

Replacement Instructions for the SpO2 PCBA (P/N 670-0916-01)

Disassembling the Transmitter Housing

1. Remove the battery.
2. Remove the ECG lead wires, SpO2 adapter cable, and NIBP interface cable (if present).
3. Remove the patient input identifying label.
4. Unscrew the five main #4 assembly screws (three from the back of transmitter and two from the battery
compartment).

5. Place the transmitter front face up (patient input connectors oriented away from you) on your anti-static mat,
then carefully separate the housing cover from the housing base in a clockwise manner, keeping the housing
cover adjacent to the right of the housing base and holding it at an angle.

6. Disconnect the flat ribbon cable that runs between the SpO2 and RF PCBAs from the SpO2 PCBA, and
leave it connected to the RF PCBA. Set the housing base sub-assembly aside.

! • Avoid touching any components on either of the exposed PCBAs.

7. Disconnect the flex strip circuit (amber colored) from the SpO2 input connector (zero insertion force
connector) at the SpO2 PCBA as follows (Figure 2):
a. With the flat end of a small flat screwdriver, gently pull up and unlatch the latch bar at both sides of
connector.
b. With the flat end of the screwdriver, gently pull the flex strip circuit up and away from the connector until
fully disengaged.

c. Remove all five #2 philips screws securing the SpO2 PCBA to the housing cover (Figure 3).
d. Remove the battery plate from the top of the SpO2 PCBA.

! • Be careful not to stress the flex circuit.

e. Carefully remove the SpO2 PCBA from housing cover as follows:

i. Lift the end of the PCBA opposite from the SpO2 input connector up and over the housing edge,
slowly rotating it into an upright position.
ii. Slide the PCBA out from under the flex strip circuit. Do not touch any components in the SpO2
PCBA.
Removal of the SpO2 PCBA is complete.

Installing the New SpO2 PCBA and Assembling the Transmitter Housing
1. Without touching any components on the new SpO2 PCBA, slide the SpO2 PCBA with its leading edge
(connector end) at an angle under the flex strip circuit. Keep the rest of the PCBA and the flex strip circuit
from being scraped by any sharp edges.
2. Place the battery plate (label facing up) onto the SpO2 PCBA.
3. Fasten all five #2 philips screws lightly, then proceed to tighten the screws to .9 - 1.2 in/lbs (11 - 14 cN/m).
4. Lift the loose end of the flex strip circuit (you can use the flat end of a small flat screwdriver to assist you),
and mate with the SpO2 input zero insertion force connector. Push down gently on the flex strip circuit to
ensure full engagement with the connector.
5. Latch down both ends of the connector while keeping light pressure on the flex strip circuit.
6. Check that the housing cover gasket is fully seated in the housing cover without any ripples or kinks.
7. Place the completed housing cover next to the right side of the housing base, and tilt it to the left at a
45-degree angle. With the SpO2 PCBA facing left, plug the flat ribbon cable into the SpO2 PCBA.
8. Rotate the housing cover into its final correct position on the housing base.

!
• Applying the correct amount of torque to the housing cover screws is essential for proper
performance of the housing cover gasket. Under-torquing will result in water leakage.
Over-torquing can cause housing damage and may damage the plastic ESD screw heads.

9. Be sure the O-ring gaskets are installed on the five main assembly screws. Replace the five main assembly
screws and fasten them lightly; then proceed to tighten all screws to 3 in/lb (34 cN/m).
10. Replace the patient input identifying label.
11. Replace the battery.
Assembly of the transmitter housing is complete.
Test transmitter performance as described in the Ultraview Digital Telemetry Service Manual (P/N 070-0744-xx.)
Test SpO2 performance as described below.
SpO2 Performance Test
1. Connect the SpO2 cable adapter (P/N 700-0014-00, Nellcor) to the SpO2 connector of the transmitter.
2. Connect the simulator to this cable (Novametrix TB500B or equivalent).
3. Accuracy — Set the simulator to the following attenuation and saturation settings and verify that the monitor
display shows the corresponding reading. Proceed from the top to the bottom of Table 2. Ignore transient
error messages during and following the setting changes.
