1 WELCOME
Welcome to our children’s liturgy
2 THE WEDNESDAY WORD IS
WITNESS
3 HERE I AM, LORD
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?

I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.

4 TODAY WE HEAR ABOUT THE BIRTH OF A VERY IMPORTANT

PERSON AND HOW HE RECEIVED HIS NAME.
LET US THINK ABOUT HOW OUR NAMES HELP US TO
UNDERSTAND WHO WE ARE.
5
Opening prayer:
Loving God, you know all our names. Help us to remember that we
are all born unique and precious. When we see stories of those in
need, remind us that each person is like us, with a name that
belongs just to them. Amen.
6

Listen to me, you islands;

hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born the Lord called me;
from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.

Before I was born the Lord called me;
from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.
He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,
in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow
and concealed me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will display my splendour.”
But I said, “I have laboured in vain;
I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,
and my reward is with my God.”

7
And now the Lord says—
he who formed me in the womb to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
and gather Israel to himself,
for I am honoured in the eyes of the Lord
and my God has been my strength—
he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob
and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”,

When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to
a son.
Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her
great mercy, and they shared her joy.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were
going to name him after his father Zechariah,
but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”
They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has
that name.”
Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like
to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s
astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he
began to speak, praising God.
All the neighbours were filled with awe, and throughout the hill
country of Judea people were talking about all these things.
Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is
this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

John the Baptist is a very important person in the Bible.
Do you know who he is?
Do you remember any other story about him?
John’s mother, Elizabeth, was not expected to have children, so
when John was born it was a great gift to her and her husband
Zechariah.
How did you get your name?
John was an unusual name for his family but it was the name God
had given him. It means ‘God is gracious’ and reminds us of God’s
kindness to us. Do you think it was a good name to give the baby?
As John grew up, his faith in God showed that it was a very good
choice.
