Solution
This document provides the troubleshooting instructions for the following type of print quality issues seen on the printer.
Troubleshooting
Replacement of the printer's imaging unit is necessary to fix the issue. Please replace the Imaging Unit through the normal
Warranty Return and Replacement process.
Parts recommendation
• 50F0Z00 – MS/MX31x/41x/51x/61x – WW Return Imaging Unit
• 52D0Z00 – MS/MX71x/81x – WW Return Imaging Unit

Additional Information
If the customer is using Genuine Lexmark Branded Supplies; and replacing the Imaging Unit does not resolve the customer
print quality concerns, please contact Lexmark Technical Support to escalate the issue.
IMPORTANT! For the customers who are using a third party toner cartridge, if the printer continues to have print
quality issues, or other performance issues after replacing the Imaging Unit, then the root cause may be the third party
toner cartridge. The printer or component damage caused by a third party toner cartridge is not covered under the
Lexmark Hardware or Supplies Warranty. The customer may need to buy both a genuine Lexmark Branded toner
cartridge and imaging unit to bring the device back to proper performance levels.
Troubleshooting
Replacement of the printer's imaging unit is necessary to fix the issue. Please replace the Imaging Unit through the normal
Warranty Return and Replacement process. This specific issue is different from most other print quality issues, thus the
following corrective actions must be implemented on the printer to ensure performance improvement in addition to
replacing the imaging unit.
Step Action
1
Update the printer firmware (RIP/Engine) to the latest available level.
Turn off or disable Advance Start and Smart Run Out using any of the following methods:
• Manually change the engine settings from the Diagnostic Menu. Navigate through Diagnostic Menu >
Printer Setup > configure the EngSetting 14 value = 48.
• Use a VCC/bundle file and refer to the following links to download the file:
◦ Single Function MS31x/41x/51x/61x/71x/81x
◦ Multi Function MX31x/41x/51x/61x/71x/81x
2 Flashing the NPA command is the easiest way to change the printer settings if the printer does not
have a front cover USB port.
Notes:
• Please read this document NPA and VCC Setting Adjustments for MSMX31_41_51_61_71_81x Devices_v4 for
the general instructions on NPA and VCC setting adjustments.
• The change of engine setting 14 to a value of 48 will have no effect on printer performance unless the printer
is running in FW E609 or higher.
• Turning off Advance Start and Smart Run Out does not produce a material change in the printer performance.
You may see a slight, immaterial difference in time (may change time by approximately one second) to the
first page and overall print job time. The actual time changes depend on print application and printer model.
Ensure that Quiet Mode = OFF by navigating through Settings > General Settings > Quiet Mode.
3 • Quite Mode = OFF (Settings > General Settings > Quiet Mode)
• Fax speaker mode = OFF (Settings > Fax Settings > Analog Fax Setup > Speaker Settings >
Speaker Mode)
• Fax ringer volume = Low (Settings > Fax Settings > Analog Fax Setup > Speaker Settings > Ringer
Volume)
Set print resolution to 600 dpi by navigating through the printer's Menu > Settings > Print Settings > Quality
4
Menu > Print Resolution.
NOTE: The use of Non-Lexmark supplies can result in damage to printer components and in multiple failures, including
degraded print quality within the system; i.e., the effects of using such non-Lexmark supplies are not limited to the
imaging unit, printhead, fuser, transfer system, and paper-feed reliability.
