Using This Manual

Using This Manual

This manual provides information on how to use Primary Test Manager safely,
properly and efficiently. The Primary Test Manager User Manual gets you
familiar with operating Primary Test Manager and guides you step by step
through the test procedures with the OMICRON electronics test systems.
This manual and the technical documentation shipped with the test systems
always have to be available on the site where Primary Test Manager is used.
Read all manuals carefully before using Primary Test Manager and observe the
safety, installation, and operation instructions therein. Reading this manual
alone does not release you from the duty to comply with all national and
international safety regulations relevant to working on the high-voltage
equipment.

Conventions and Symbols Used

In this manual, the following symbols indicate important safety information.

Symbol Description
Caution: Equipment damage or loss of data possible

Warning: Personal injury or death of the operating staff or

severe damage to objects possible

Safety Rules

Safety Rules
Before operating Primary Test Manager and the test set, read the following
safety rules carefully. When testing with Primary Test Manager, observe the
safety rules in this chapter and all relevant safety instructions in the technical
documentation shipped with the test systems. If you do not understand some
safety instructions, contact OMICRON electronics before proceeding.
Before connecting any test leads to a test object, always observe the five safety
rules:
• Disconnect completely
• Secure from reconnection
• Verify that the installation is dead
• Carry out grounding and short-circuiting
• Provide protection against adjacent live parts

Operator Qualifications and Safety Standards

Working on the high-voltage equipment can be extremely dangerous.
Consequently, only qualified, skilled, and authorized personnel is allowed to test
with Primary Test Manager. Before starting to work, clearly establish the
responsibilities. Personnel receiving training, instructions, directions, or
education on Primary Test Manager must be under constant supervision of an
experienced operator while working on the high-voltage equipment.
Testing with Primary Test Manager must comply with the following safety
standards:
• EN 50191 (VDE 0104) "Erection and Operation of Electrical Test Equipment"
• EN 50110-1 (VDE 0105 Part 100) "Operation of Electrical Installations"
• IEEE 510 "IEEE Recommended Practices for Safety in High-Voltage and
High-Power Testing"
Moreover, observe all relevant national and international regulations for
accident prevention.

Orderly Measures
This manual and the technical documentation shipped with the test systems or
their e-book versions always have to be available on the site where Primary Test
Manager is operated. The users of Primary Test Manager must read all relevant
documentation before operating Primary Test Manager and observe the safety,
installation, and operation instructions therein.
Primary Test Manager may be used only as described in this manual. Any other
use is not in accordance with the regulations. The manufacturer and the
distributor are not liable for damage resulting from improper usage. The user
alone assumes all responsibility and risk. Full compliance with the regulations
also includes following the instructions provided in this manual.

Introduction

1 Introduction
Primary Test Manager is a management tool for testing primary assets such as
power transformers with the OMICRON test systems. Primary Test Manager
provides a computer interface to the test set, controls the automated test
procedures, and facilitates testing of power transformers by guiding you through
tests. With Primary Test Manager, you can manage locations, transformers, and
jobs, and then perform measurements by just pressing the I/0 button on the front
panel of the CPC 100 test system. Afterwards, you can retrieve exhaustive test
reports. Primary Test Manager runs on a computer or a notebook, and
communicates with the test set through the Ethernet connection.
With Primary Test Manager, you can make all relevant tests for the two-winding
transformers, three-winding transformers, and autotransformers.

1. Ethernet Network Interface Card. The CPC 100 can be connected with RJ-45 connectors either
directly to the computer or to the local network, for example by using an Ethernet hub.

To install Primary Test Manager:

1. Connect the computer’s Ethernet port to the network connector of the
CPC 100 test system with an Ethernet cable.
Note: You can operate Primary Test Manager but perform no tests without
connection to the CPC 100.
2. Switch on the CPC 100.
3. Put the Primary Test Manager DVD-ROM in the DVD-ROM drive of your
computer and follow the instructions on the screen.
Note: Upgrade your CPC 100 during the installation, if necessary.

1.3 Application Data and its Backup

The application data is stored in the following directory:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%/Application Data/OMICRON/PTM/Data.
We strongly recommend to back up this directory at regular intervals (for
example, scheduled daily) depending on the intensity you are working with
Primary Test Manager. Since this directory contains the application data, files
must not be directly modified to avoid data inconsistency.
Note: %ALLUSERSPROFILE% is an environment variable, pointing, for
example, under Windows XP to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users and
under Windows 7 to C:\ProgramData\OMICRON\PTM\Data.
