against. It quickly became clear that making these
choices was not going to be easy; my husband and I
would need to learn about and consider each vaccine
individually.
In the years since my oldest daughter was born, the
vaccine debate has been fueled by books and articles
that examine the link between autism and vaccines, and
that give parents detailed information not included in
the CDC-published handouts found in every doctor’s
office. These include David Kirby’s Evidence of Harm:
Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic—A
Medical Controversy (St. Martin’s Press, 2005), as well
as more general books about vaccines—such as Dr.
Stephanie Cave and Deborah Mitchell’s What Your
Doctor May Not Tell You About Children’s Vaccinations
(Warner Books, 2001), Aviva Jill Romm’s Vaccinations:
A Thoughtful Parent’s Guide (Healing Arts Press, 2001),
and, most recently, Dr. Robert W. Sears’s The Vaccine
Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child (Little,
Brown, 2007). Celebrities such as actress and former
Playboy model Jenny McCarthy, who believes her
son was damaged by vaccines, and actor Jim Carrey,
have brought attention to the vaccine issue, as have
books by staunchly pro-vaccine advocates—such as
Dr. Paul A. Offit’s Autism’s False Prophets: Bad Science,
Risky Medicine, and the Search for a Cure (Columbia
University Press, 2008), which traces the history of
the disease and concludes that there is no connection
between autism and vaccines.
Some vaccine advocates think the abundance of
information now available, especially from websites
that often are neither edited nor peer-reviewed, is
unfortunate and often inaccurate. They argue that most
parents are not trained scientists, and cannot effectively

attempts to present some parents’ fear of vaccines as just
