MORTALITY RATES / Death Rates RATES / RATIOS

- Mortality but varies, death rate
MORTALITY SPECIFIC RATES 1. Attack Rate (AR)
1. Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) - exposure to certain disease
1. Specific Death Rate (SDR) - < 1 y/o
2. Cause Specific Death Rate (CSDR) 2. Proportion, Mortality Rate (PMR)
3. Age Specific Death Rate (ASDR) 2. Neonatal (NMR) - death ratio
4. Sex Specific Death Rate (SSDR) - < 28 days or 1 month
3. Case Fatality Ratio (CFR)
Plus: Incidence Rate (Morbidity) (IR)– new cases, actual 3. Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) - index or killing power of disease (cases)
- death of a woman while pregnant, or within 42
Multiplier Factor – 100,000 days of termination of pregnancy 4. Swaroop’s Index (SI)
- deaths 50 y/o & above
Denominator – population 4. Fetal Mortality Rate (FMR)
- death prior to expulsion, death in uterus Plus: Prevalence Rate (Morbidity) PR – old & new cases
Formula Mortality Specific Rates: - fetal demise Multiplier Factor – 100
- still birth Denominator – rates / ratios (specific for each category)
Total # of reg. MSDR, CSDR, ASDR, SSDR x 100,000
Population 5. Crude Death Rate (CDR) Formula for Prevalence Rate (PR) =
- total # of deaths total # of old & new cases w/in specified time x 100
Formula Incidence Rate: Population
6. Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
Total # of new cases w/in specified time x 100,000 - total # of live births AR = total # persons acquiring disease x 100
population Total # of exposed person or population
Crude – over all, no specific time
Multiplier Factor – 1,000 PMR= total # of reg. deaths for specific cause or age x 100
Denominator – Registered Live Births (RLB) Total # of reg. deaths from all causes or ages

Formula Mortality Rates: CFR = total # of reg. deaths from specific disease x 100
Total # of reg. cases from specific disease
Total # of reg. IMR, NMR, MMR, FMR x 1,000
RLB (Reg. Live Births) SI = total # of deaths of 50 y/o above x 100
total deaths
CBR = Total # of Live Births reg. in calendar yr. x 1,000
Population

CDR = Total # of Deaths reg. in calendar yr. x 1,000

Population
Example:

Population = 4,000 3. Related importance of TB as main cause

Total Birth = 500
Total Death = 400 PMR = total # of deaths from specific cause x 100
Deaths to TB = 40 Total # of deaths from all causes
Cases of TB = 80
Total Infant Death = 4 PMR = Deaths to TB 40 x 100
400
1.Infant Mortality Rate = 10 Proportion Mortality Rate

IMR = Infant Death x 1,000 4. Morbidity Rate of TB – Incidence Rate

RLB
= 4 x 1,000 Morbidity Rate (IR) = Cases of TB x 100,000
500 Population
= 8 Infant Mortality Rate = 80 Cases of TB x 100,000
4,000
2. Case Fatality Ratio = 2,000 Morbidity Rate of TB

CFR = total # of deaths of specific disease x 100

Total # of cases of disease
= deaths to TB 40 x 100
80
= 50 Case Fatality Ratio
