5. Coursework I: Group Assignment & Individual Presentation (50%)

5.1 Purpose

This assessment aims to achieve the following objective and learning outcome:

Synthesise the concepts and theories of global economics with special emphasis on
international trade models, foreign exchange market, and exchange rate theories.

5.1.1 The Task – Students within a tutorial group should form into FIVE (5) subgroups
maximum. Each subgroup should consist of 5 to 6 members only (at the
discretion of the tutor). Students cannot withdraw themselves from the formed
subgroups. Each subgroup should elect a group leader.

5.1.2 Students are expected to prepare a group report based on the selected topic and
present their findings during tutorial classes. The assignment should include the
following:

a) Cover page
b) Plagiarism Statement Form
c) Coursework Feedback Form – Appendix I
d) Assessment Grid – Appendix II
e) Assessment Criteria Form (one for each presenter) – Appendix III
f) Table of Contents
g) The Group Report
h) Appendices/References

5.1.3 The topics of the group assignment and presentation: - each group will be
assigned one of the following areas to be addressed based on a first-come-first-
served basis.

T1 International Trade Theory: Standard Theory of International Trade


 The concept of comparative advantage.
 Does the comparative advantage theory explain the international trade
in this globalised world?
 Limitation of the theory of comparative advantage.

T2 International Trade Theory: Standard Theory of International Trade


 Classical versus New Trade Theories
 Demand-oriented theory – Overlapping Demand Theory.
 Empirical evidence on overlapping demands theory in explaining the
international trade flow.

T3 International Trade Policy: Trade Restriction (Tariffs)


 Theoretical background of tariffs.
 The rationale for imposing import tariffs by the United States against
its trade partners.
 Reaction from the United States’ trade partners on the import tariffs.

T4. International Trade Policy: Non-tariff trade barriers - Technical Trade


Barrier
 Theoretical background of non-tariff trade barriers.
 The economic impact of technical barrier to trade.
 Policy recommendation.

T5. International Trade Policy: Economic Integration


 The concept of free trade area.
 Does the ASEAN free trade area (AFTA) accelerate the trade between
its member nations?
 Challenges facing by the ASEAN free trade area.

5.1.4 It is compulsory for students to send the softcopy of the assignment to “Turnitin”
system for checking on plagiarism before the date of presentation. Students who
find that the draft of assignment has more than 15% plagiarism are required to
amend accordingly.

5.1.5 Plagiarism involves copying materials from other sources without


acknowledging the original author. The University College treats plagiarism as a
serious offence. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against students,
including failure of the coursework or the course.

5.1.6 The presentation will be held during tutorial classes from week 8 (Topic 1) until
week 12 (Topic 5). Students are required to submit their assignment prior to the
presentation.

5.1.7 Each group will be given 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for the
Question and Answer (Q & A) session. Students will be assessed individually
based on the assessment grid and mark allocations in Appendix I.

5.1.8 After the date of presentation, no amendments are allowed. Assignments with
more than 15% plagiarism will be downgraded to a zero mark.

5.1.9 The assignment should be neatly typed using Font 12 Times New Roman with
1.5 line spacing on A4 size papers.

5.1.10 All pages must be consecutively numbered using Arabic numerals (e.g., 1, 2, 3,
etc) (including appendices, if any) and printed at the bottom centre of the page.

5.1.11 Mode of Referencing: students are expected to apply the Harvard Referencing
System. It is important that any evidence and sources of information used are
properly shown in the report.

5.1.12 All members will receive the same grade for the group assignment, unless there is
a problem of FREE RIDING. The particular individual member who did not
contribute shall be assessed individually and assign a different grade than the
group’s.

5.1.13 The length of the Assignment: 5,000 – 6,000 words.

5.1.14 Date of submission of assignment cum presentation: Week 9 (during tutorial)

5.1.15 Date of return of marked Coursework: Week 13 (during tutorial)

5.1.16 For late submission, there will be a reduction of absolute marks from the mark’s
score submitted:

(a) Late 1 to 3 days after deadline of submission: minus 10 marks;


(b) Late 4 to 7 days after deadline of submission: minus 20 marks;
(c) Late more than 7 days after deadline of submission: 0 marks.

6. Coursework 2: Mid-term Test (50%)

6.1 Mid-term test will be held in Week 7. The duration of the test will be 1 hours 15
minutes.

6.2 It consists of THREE (3) structured questions. Chapters covered are as follows:

International Trade Theory


 The Law of Comparative Advantage
 The Standard Theory of International Trade:
(i) Factor Endowment Theory
(ii) The Heckscher Ohlin Theory
 Economies of Scale and Specialisation
 Theory of Overlapping Demand and Product Cycles
 Terms of Trade
 Gains From Trade
